Match report
Some forced changes were made, with Blackie, Tony and LJ coming into the side. There had only been a little overnight rain but it was dry in the morning and the forecast was promising. There were a few threatening clouds around during the warm up that did more than threaten just as we were about to get started. A heavy drizzle was enough to delay the start of the game after another lost toss meant we were batting first. The bookies had us as favourites against a team struggling at third bottom of our division and having been bowled out for 94 the previous day.
Wally was promoted to open with Howie and the two played well to put on 98 for the first wicket. Howie was first to go being freakishly run out at the non-strikers end from a miss-field by the bowler. The run rate was steady throughout and Wally completed his maiden fifty for the first team from 71 balls. The introduction of Ramzan slowed things down a bit and was the undoing of Wally.
It’s never a good idea to say “I haven’t been out caught behind this season” just before you’re due to bat. So it was inevitable that Mystic Bob was third out, caught behind. Coops was going well as usual and was well supported by Tony. When Coops was out caught there was plenty of work to do to get a competitive total on the board. Tony came up with the goods with a better than a run a ball fifty to see us to a good total.
It wasn’t going to be easy to score quickly on the slow wicket but a few loose deliveries kept them in the game. It took a good bit of fielding in the covers from Coops to bring the first wicket. Howie continued his poor catching form and dropped the pro early in his innings. Fortunately Drummy’s good catching form continued and he made no mistake a few overs later as Blackie picked up his first wicket. A good spell from Dougie brought no reward but Blackie produced another wicket to stop the partnership from developing.
The run rate was always increasing and a sharp chance in the covers was parried over the bar by Tony Buffon. Dougie then took a good catch at long on and the balance of the game shifted in our favour. A big partnership then developed and Veteran Willy Morton was proving to be a hard man to bowl to. They were able to gradually increase the scoring rate and were helped by a few mistakes in the field. Another dropped catch, this time by Blackie off his own bowling.
Coops couldn’t find the same good areas as the previous day and the batsmen cashed in on a few loose ones. This started to swing things back in favour of Penicuick and Howie’s last couple of overs proved to be a little expensive too. Bobby was brought on to try and finish things off and bowled a good spell apart from one full toss that was smacked for six. LJ came on as a last ditch attempt to stem the flow of runs and bowled Steel to give us some hope. Morton continued to find runs and some good lower order hitting took us by surprise.
I’m still not sure where we lost this game but there’s no doubt that sloppy fielding and dropped catches played a major part. We perhaps didn’t realise what a great chance this was to reach the semi-final of the Scottish Cup, something we haven't done for a number of years. A very disappointing end to our cup run, which makes me think of these words by Thomas Edison “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”
