Forfarshire Quiz Night - Tuesday 11th December 2012
A great time was had by
all at last night’s Forfarshire Quiz night at the Fort Bar. A very healthy turnout
of players, parents, friends, committee members and supporters made
for a good night and there was healthy competition among the teams
for the first prize.
It was with baited
breath that the crowd waited to hear who had won – and it turned
out that the winning team included the McLelland combo of the
President and his First Lady and they went home with the spoils.
Their four person team was made up by Stephen Hawkins and Carol
Vorderman.
The questions leaned
heavily towards the topics of food and seventies pop music which led
to one of the teams made up of youngsters scooping the wooden spoon.
It was a big surprise that Simmy’s team didn’t win given the main
subjects on offer. Cully was hoping for more gardening content.
Some excellent and
humorous team names were announced, however the members of the Willie
Collum Guide Dog Appeal have asked me to point out that this name was
not a joke and it is a serious charity that they have started.
An auction followed the
quiz with M and S vouchers, an autographed cricket bat and a case of
wine all going for healthy sums. A copy of the very last Dandy comic
signed by the editor was the final item sold off and Alan Salisbury
went in with an opening bid of £50 - which if successful would not
only have earned him a comic but also a tumbler over the head from a
visibly shocked wife; but perhaps thankfully he was outbid and thus
saved himself taking a trip to A and E.
Following the auction
there was the raffle - which is being entered into the Guinness Book
of Records next year for the biggest raffle in history. The people
who didn’t win a prize seemed to be in the minority as bottle of
wine after bottle of wine was dispensed to grateful winners. All
winners are of course requested not to drink their prizes; and to
please bring them back to the next club function where we will try
and break the record for the biggest raffle again....
No doubt aided by Ted’s
friendly raffle ticket selling technique – “You don’t have
enough” – a fantastic £1,000 was raised for club funds.
Dick and Rae both said
thanks to the assembled masses for their attendance and contribution.
Dick’s competitive spirit came out during his speech when he
questioned the winning team’s location right next to the
quizmaster - and as a result in future quizzes the President and the
First Lady will be positioned in the back corner; with Dick’s team
taking the next to the quizmaster table.......
A great big thank you
to everyone for attending and for making it a good night out as well
as a great boost for club coffers. Special thanks go to Bette and Ted
for all of their help in making the night such a great success.
I am off to Google
“exotic fruits of the world” and read Cliff Richard’s
autobiography ahead of the next quiz.....
