Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v West of Scotland on Sat 08 May 2010 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 5 wickets

Match report It was a bright day with plenty of sunshine but a cold easterly wind ensured that shorts were still a poor choice. Our visitors from West of Scotland arrived at Forthill before most of the home team, which isn’t difficult on some occasions. The warm up started in good time though and the Forfs were relishing their second outing in the Premier division. Tony replaced Bobby Cannon and Sam came in for Mat Parker.

After losing the toss the Forfs took to the field and Kelbey and Q started things off. A few short deliveries were seized upon by the batsmen as they got off to a flyer. The outfield was very fast and hard so there was value in the shots from the batsmen. Watson was looking in a particularly aggressive mood, which was out of character from the way he usually plays. Kelbey wasn’t looking comfortable with his choice of ends and the skipper decided to switch him round. This brought the breakthrough as he produced a cracker that cut back and clattered Watson’s middle stump.

Dougie came into the attack but didn’t quite find his length. Kelbey’s excellent spell continued and he got through his ten overs and picked up Young, bowled by another good one and Luthra LBW. Rhino was economical as usual and after a couple of ropey overs at the start Blackie settled into a good spell.

Lockhart passed fifty as he and Williams staged a bit of a recovery. A risky shot in the air to deep mid-wicket proved Lockhart’s downfall. AB taking a really good catch, low down running in from the boundary and Blackie had his reward. Blackie picked up his second when Williams was bowled through the gate. West failed to put together any other partnerships and only some big hitting from the pro at the end pushed their score passed 200. Blackie had a change of ends for his last over, which proved costly. AB finished things off really well with 3 wickets in his 3 overs at the death.

We thought 240 would ba a par score so we were pretty happy with the total they posted. The Forfs innings got off to a great start with Wally and Howie putting on 75. Wally was particularly aggressive and West’s Kiwi pro came in for some tap. He had a change of ends and McNulty came on and received more of the same, Wally taking 24 off his second over. Cran came on next and he managed to stem the flow and picked up the first wicket with Howie bowled off an inside edge.

The pro’s change of ends didn’t help much, his 6 overs yielded 44 runs for the Forfs. Goudie had another spell and bounced out Wally who top edged one to the man at deep square leg. A fine innings of 60 but he should have had a few more. Talpur came on and picked up Rhino with his first ball, fishing obviously not one of Watson’s strengths. He found some good areas and asked a few questions of the batsmen.

Things were a little nervy at 138 for 4 and didn’t improve when AB was adjudged LBW to Talpur with the score on 150. He could consider himself a little unlucky, the umpire deciding that there was no benefit of the doubt despite being hit on the front foot above the knee roll.

The 2 finishers, Umi and Kelbey, came together and both batted well, making valuable cases to be higher up the order. At the same time they are very valuable batting in these positions. Kelbey kept a nice cool head and worked the ball round nicely while Umi tried to be a bit more positive. His attempts to come down the track and hit Talpur over the top were all fruitless, other than to cause a few groans from the nervous spectators. the total was passed and the win secured with more than 11 overs to spare. Another good result for the Forfs.
