Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v President's XI on Tue 02 Aug 2005 at 12 noon
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 1 wicket

Match report There was a welcome change in the recent weather with everyone soaking up the sunshine before the start of the game. It was something of a mystery as to who would be making up the opposition team but it soon became clear as a string of Scottish cricketing legends, Aussie ringers, recently retired and soon to be retired Forfarshire players walked into the ground. Dean joined us for his first taste of first team action and Watty was back from his short trip to Holland. We had a bat first and as Howie was still in his bed, Neil Martin was promoted to open the innings with Pete. Opening the attack for the Presidents XI was DHSFP pro Brendan Ford, with his “extra wheels”, and the intimidating frame of former Scotland bowler Jerry Moir. They caused considerable problems for the opening batsmen and someone was heard to describe Jerry’s bowling as fast leg-breaks coming down from 8 feet. Needless to say the scoring rate reflected the quality of the bowling and a few risks had to be taken to get things moving.

Ryan was due to come in at number 4 and as usual was becoming increasingly impatient to get to the crease. His criticism becoming more vocal with every play and miss he was forced to endure. Everyone else was happy enough to relax in the sun and chew over the merits of keeping wickets in hand. With a few strokes of luck followed by a change in bowling we were able to make some progress. The familiar, if not as lengthy, run up of Barry Stewart and menacing spin of Andy Tennant being the changes made. Then some equally familiar wides from Baz and a few streaky shots helped us recover the run rate to 4 an over. Both openers completed half-centuries before being dismissed which brought Umair and Ryan to the crease. Ryan immediately made his presence felt by hitting Ted Walker over Long-off. Never one to miss a chance to coach the youngsters Ryan found time between overs to point out to Umair where he was going wrong. Then after attempting one reverse-sweep too many was bowled by a frustrated Ted. Probably one of those “Do as I say not as I do” moments.

Tony played a handy innings, hitting the ball well to varying parts of the ground. In particular wherever Baz was fielding seemed to be a popular choice – “one for the throw”. Chic made 13, unlucky for some and it proved to be for him, Drummy predicting his fate seconds before it happened – bowled off the 7th ball of the over. Bobby Cannon made a quick 17 to take our total to a respectable 267, once again a good wicket and fast outfield helping the batsmen. We then enjoyed an absolutely fabulous tea provided by the Presidents wife, Kris. There were a few people moving a bit slower than normal around the field after tea.

It was our past and present club coaches that opened the batting for the Presidents XI. Miersy was in negative runs after a few misfields that hadn’t gone unnoticed. While we had been enjoying tea the sunshine had been replaced by cloud and it looked like we would have some of the rain that Dick predicted. There was a bit of movement about for the opening bowlers and it wasn’t long before a few Chinese cuts found their way to the boundary. Rhino soon had his man, a contentious full toss being Miers undoing. Angus Hay graced Forthill with his presence once again but failed to heed Drinno’s advice and not try and cut length balls off middle stump. Brendan was next in and he and Drinno set about the task at hand and both played very well.

Sure as fate the rain started to fall, a light drizzle soon turning to a steady shower and the covers were pushed onto the square. After a short break the skies cleared and we got going again. Drinno was out to Howie, trying to cut one of his Howitzers and the run out bowler, Umair, was brought on. He quickly produced a result as Brendan was run out after a slight mix up. It was then up to the experienced Bob McFarlane and the retired Mike King to sustain the run rate. They both did this very well playing some good attacking shots. It was clear that Mike hadn’t in fact given up cricket 3 years ago and had been secretly practicing on the streets of Edinburgh. The outfield was quite wet after the rain and the ball had become quite soft and slippery making bowling more difficult.

Once Mike and Faf had departed it was time for some spin from Drummy, he replaced Howie who finished his spell with 2 wickets. Jerry Moir came in and played some big shots and it went down to the last over needing just 3 to win. Rhino had Andy Tennant caught and in came Forfs legend Alex Steele. Steeley held his nerve and picked up the single he needed, Jerry hit another single and that left Steeley on strike for the last ball with the scores tied. It was a tense finish but they managed to scramble a leg bye to win the game. Another narrow defeat for the Forfs and the second by 1 wicket in a row.
