Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Crieff on Sun 04 Sep 2005 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 4 wickets

Match report
Crieff made their first league visit to Forthill with the ground having an end of season look about it, the outfield long and the first rugby pitch markings visible.

Forthill were asked to bat first and there had been talk of Crieff having a pace attack which might cause problems (despite Forthill’s convincing win at Crieff earlier in the season) but it proved to be the good line and length rather than much extra pace that caused problems for the home batsmen.

After losing Gav early on (4-1), Giggsy and Clark batted cautiously and the scoreboard ticked over at a reasonable rate before Oram nipped one through Giggsy’s defence with the score on 40. Clark and Pottsy were going along well, Clark punishing any wayward delivery before pushing at a ball just outside off stump to be caught by the keeper. (54-3) Dean walked confidently to the wicket but was soon walking back again after being caught plum in front by the very next delivery. (54-4) Young Simmy was surrounded by fielders for the hat-trick ball and chose to play no shot to a straight one… but the ball passed just over middle stump, much to the annoyance of the bowler and the mirth of the batting side. Change bowler Brown continued the good line and length with gentle away swingers, a good yorker hitting Stephen’s off stump in the next over. (63-5)

Simmy senior and Pottsy took the score up towards 100, wth Pottsy finding the wayward leg spin of Davies to his liking, before Simmy offered a low catch to Oram at slip off of Brown. (108-6) Elliot batted steadily for his 15, a miss-timed drive proving his downfall at 139-7. Pottsy was next to go, nicking one to the keeper who took a good catch standing up. (155-8) Useful runs from Stuart, Kembo and Jinglis took the total up to 172 all out.

A good start was needed, and Giggsy marked his last match for the club before moving to Edinburgh by taking a simple catch at square leg quickly followed by the catch of the season – a two handed catch diving to his right off a hard hit full toss from Kean – to give the start that was needed.

From that point on the game changed dramatically as Crieff’s Kiwi all-rounder Tim Oram smashed the ball to all parts of the ground, his 123 including 9 huge sixes, one hitting the pavilion on the full, another bouncing on the roof, and several others having to be retrieved from the school. A couple of chances were missed before a reaction catch from Simmy jnr at first slip saw his innings come to an end. A couple of quick wickets had Forthill thinking that a win might just still be possible with the batting line-up looking much less dangerous, but it was not to be.

Pick of the bowlers was Elliot with his 3 for 24 from 5 overs while Jinglis six overs for 51 runs demonstrates the punishment given to some of the bowlers by one of the most powerful batsman seen at Forthill for some time.
