Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v Arbroath United on Sat 10 Jun 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 117 runs

Match report There was a strong and chilly breeze from the North Sea that kept the temperature down. It looked a good toss to win, drummy obliged and we batted first. After a run fest the week before and dry weather it wasn’t likely to be a low scoring game. The outfield was also quicker than AB devouring a bag of Doritos. Tony was away running round the coast of Southern Africa so he was replaced by Richie who returned safely from his run across the Highlands of Scotland. The new look opening pair of Garden and Watson got us off to a good start. Runs were coming without too much difficulty and Ryan couldn’t resist a few ‘double steps’ to try and put pressure on the bowlers. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts he started to find the rope. Howie was looking good once again but managed to pull a long-hop straight to mid-wicket. Cam had been short of runs and started a little nervy but was soon accumulating runs in a good partnership with Ryan.

Once Cam was out Bobby came in and once again got a start but couldn’t go on to a good score. The run rate was still very good but we didn’t put together any more significant partnerships. Ryan passed his hundred in good time and looked like he could break some records. Unfortunately he picked out the fielder at mid-wicket and was caught in slightly controversial circumstances. The spectators at the scoreboard spotted the bowler over stepping the front line several times but had been unnoticed by the umpire. As it turned out Ryan was caught from one of these missed infringements. A few more wickets fell and it looked less likely that we would make over 300. The Beast and the finisher were on hand to ensure the last few overs were profitable and pushed our score to an imposing total.

Gally was still a bit stiff from his triathlon the week before and his first couple of overs weren’t up to his usual standards. Watty replaced him and the required run rate was soon climbing. The extra pressure saw the first wicket fall with a run out instigated by Bobby C. His fielding has been excellent the last few games. The introduction of spin from Watty and Gally returning to the action saw a few wickets fall. The Arbroath skipper Spink was still looking determined and hit a few bad balls to the boundary. His innings was cut short by an astonishing catch on the square leg boundary by Rhino. Gally dropped one a bit short and Spink caught it out the middle. Fortunately for us Watty clutched it out of the air with one hand and managed to stay just inside the rope when he hit the deck. Another run out and the scoreboard read seven wickets down for just 119 runs. The good bowling and fielding had reaped the rewards and Arbroath were all but out of the game. Umair was back in the attack by now and found some reward for his efforts. There was some resistance from the Arbroath lower order but it wasn’t long before the last wicket fell, even if Drummy did fail to remove the bails!
