Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 35 runs

Match report Forfarshire Under 18’s took part in Scottish Cup Finals day at New Williamfield in Stirling on Sunday 10th September.

The players and supporters arrived to catch the Thompson Tours team bus from Forthill early on Sunday morning. Everyone was prompt with the exception of Lord Ted of Fartar and the young Dukes of Fartar who decided to visit the Co-Op crisp and cake emporium ahead of the journey. They appeared to have purchased the whole contents of the confectionery and bakery departments judging by the bulging nature of the multiple carrier bags they stored in the hold.

The bus set off and it was a fairly quiet journey that was enjoyed. That was apart from one incident of note. The bus driver went to great lengths to explain to everyone that the arms on the chairs were delicate and required to be handled with the utmost care and attention. The black mark came when the self appointed tea adjudicator received a telling off for having the audacity to actually sit on one of the fragile arms. How it did not break is another story.....

Team manager Baz was absent from the bus due to a family medical emergency which thankfully turned out not to be too serious. Lord Ted and King Pumper were in attendance on the bus and were quick to advise everyone that they had enjoyed a nice team bonding session with Baz the previous day in Arbroath - and were confident they could work out his inner thinking and mirror his deepest thoughts in all ways.

They said the one message that they needed to convey to the players was that the bus had to leave very promptly after the match; as they know how importantly Baz views the need for pre-arranged transport to leave on time.....and if it doesn’t then watch out!

Upon arrival at the ground the players changed ahead of their semi final match against Kelso and the team seemed in good fettle after an extensive warm up and an even more extensive photo shoot. It is anticipated that the images will appear in Posers Weekly in the coming weeks. Skipper Samir Hill won the toss and the stand in team management committee controversially encouraged him to bowl first – which he did –and which was almost certainly against the incumbent team manager’s tactics. Unfortunately on this big occasion there followed what was easily the team’s worst performance of the year in the field. Numerous extras were conceded and the general performance was of the poor variety. It was only when the spin of Chris Welsh and Lachlan Tosh was introduced to the attack that the run rate slowed; but Kelso were already well ahead of the clock in terms of run scoring and when the innings closed a mammoth 140 for 4 was posted from the 20 overs. The exact amount of wides conceded will not be revealed – but let’s just say it was quite a few...!!!!!

Forfarshire were going to need a super human effort to pass this total and in spite of good knocks by Lachlan Tosh, Craig Morrison and Craig McConnachie the task was too big and the Broughty Ferry lads fell 34 runs short of the total needed.

Kelso had played well and thoroughly deserved to progress to the final. For the Forfarshire lads it was a rare poor performance in 2012 and it was unfortunate that today of all days they played below their best.

Disappointed, the lads were treated to a nice lunch by the Stirling Cricket Club hosts and this perked them up a little. We were joined by Cricket Scotland president Jack Kerr and he had some nice words of consolation. He seems so much nicer than his predecessor from Rossie Priory whose name eludes me at the time of writing.

Ayr had defeated Clydesdale in the other semi final so the Forfarshire lads dusted themselves down and got ready for the third/fourth place play off.
With Baz now at the ground and back in his managerial role Samir batted first on winning the toss. We got off to a bad start when Christian and Jack H were both bowled first ball by the Clydesdale opening bowler. Lachlan and Craig M fashioned a recovery and were both going well, but when they both fell in quick succession the innings folded rapidly and the Forfarshire lads were 90 all out.
Clydesdale set about the total with some gusto and knocked off the runs quickly to secure a ten wicket victory to claim third place. Ayr defeated Kelso on the adjoining pitch to become deserved Scottish Cup winners for 2012.

The Forfarshire boys had endured a tough day and didn’t play to their best – however they should be proud of their achievements over the year. They won two very tough games earlier in the competition against Arbroath and Aberdeen before overcoming a good Broomhall side in the quarter final - and reaching Finals day was in itself a huge accomplishment. There were some great individual and team performances along the way and overall the boys had a great year and will not doubt learn a lot from the experience of Finals day.

Thanks go to Stirling CC for their hospitality on the day and for hosting the games at their very nice facility. Thanks also go to Cricket Scotland for once again running this important tournament over what has been difficult year weather wise. Thanks also go to all supporters who made the journey to support the boys.

The day was soured a little when second assistant junior head coach King Pumper decided whilst standing on the boundary edge to release one of his now famous poops. This was unfortunately timed just as the nice Stirling tea lady was walking right behind him. She is now recovering in Stirling Royal Infirmary from toxic fume inhalation.

The bus journey home saw a pit stop at Auchterarder for chips; before winding our way back to Dundee.

For the senior cricketers the bat and pads now get stuffed in the attic until next April when god willing they will be dusted down for another season. For the Forfarshire juniors however; indoor nets start on Friday and a winter of game improvement and coaching lies ahead.......
