Match report
It was an excellent day for cricket with the ground bathed in sunshine. A small crowd gathered, most of them avoiding the cool breeze with a seat in front of the scorebox. It looked a good pitch for batting and previous experience suggested the outfield would be fast. With Rhino away on Scotland duty Bobby Cannon made a return to the side and slotted in at the top of the order with Howie. The scoreboard raced to 43 before Bobby had a rush of blood and was bowled. TC and Howie kept things moving along nicely and after 15 overs 88 runs had been scored.
The chat in the dressing room was of a score over 300 and this looked likely for a while. The introduction of the pro into the bowling attack put a hold on those plans. Howie was beaten by one and departed LBW for another well made forty. Finbar's missing bat appeared just in time for Beast to bat. He looked comfortable enough facing the pro but was out disappointingly in the next over. AB departed soon after to a nothing shot and when Umi and Pete were gunned down by the umpire in quick succession, we had slumped to 107-6. Five wickets had fallen for just 14 runs.
Fortunately TC was still there and did the sensible thing to see off the pro’s final over and put on a much needed partnership with Chik. With a big score on the cards TC was a bit unlucky to drag one from very wide of off stump onto his off stump. The score was on 149 when Gally joined Chik and staged a monumental recovery. Gally’s, better than a run a ball, 41 was disappointing only in the fact he didn’t make his maiden half century for the club. Together they put on 79 precious runs to take us to a competitive total. Chik kept things going after Gally had gone and was left 1 run short of a deserved fifty.
AB managed three and a half platefuls at tea before we had to take to the field. With a good total to defend we started well with only a couple of boundaries being conceded. With the score on 19 the first wicket fell to a fantastic catch by Bobby Cannon in the covers. That gave us the boost we needed and some tight bowling made life difficult for the batsmen. The fast outfield meant that almost anything through the infield was reaching the rope. The second breakthrough came 2 overs later with a good LBW shout.
Both openers were back in the pavilion but Thyssen was still a danger. The introduction of Coops brought the next wicket with another excellent catch, this time from Beast in the gulley. This put all the pressure on the batsmen with 3 down and only 39 runs scored. They struggled to keep up with the run rate and had to start trying to play a few shots. This brought the pro’s downfall when he hit one skyward and Umair took a good catch running back at point.
Umair was in on the act again producing a wicket with his first ball to bowl Zuill. Sam then produced a run out soon after and any hope they had of winning was gone. Only 9th and 10th wicket partnerships of thirty odd each got them to a respectable total.
A bit of a let off after a slightly below par batting effort until Chik and Gally came together. It was a partnership that came at a cost though, the loss of a Forfs stalwart. Chik’s GM bat has finely had to be laid to rest. In the end a comfortable win.
