Duckworth/Lewis Method in SNCL Matches

29 Apr 2009

The Duckworth/Lewis method of calculating scores and results in rain affected matches comes into use for SNCL matches from this Saturday.

Players and spectators should note that in the second innings of a rain affected game, the scoreboard will display the D/L TIE score that is required at the end of the over in progress. The TIE score is also commonly called the PAR score.

The score to WIN is always one more than the PAR score. The PAR score is also shown on the computer print-outs that will be handed to team and match officials.

And if you're interested to know how it works.... if the first innings of a match is interrupted by rain and overs are lost, the team batting second will be set a revised PAR score which is calculated based on the runs scored, wickets lost, and number of overs bowled at the time of the first innings interruptions. Interruptions at different stages of an innings are regarded as having a different effect on the final first innings total that can be achieved. It is therefore possible for the team batting second to be set a revised PAR score that is higher than the runs scored in the first innings, most likely if there were a number of interruptions throughout the first innings.

If the second innings is interrupted and overs lost, a revised PAR score will be calculated, also taking into account when the innings interruption took place and the score at the time of the interruption.
