Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v Ferguslie on Sat 13 Jun 2009 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 31 runs (D/L method)
Match report
It’s was another good day for cricket, warm temperatures and a sunny sky. It was a good toss to win and we had a bat first on a good track. The outfield was just as quick as normal for Howie and Wally to get us started. Wally was first out when he edged behind for 5. Rhino was watchful to begin with but it wasn’t long before we saw a big six. A 112 run partnership was ended when Howie was bowled trying to play a sweep of all shots. It was another good fifty from Howie at a good rate.
AB and Rhino were also scoring at a good rate with the 150 coming up in the 27th over. A big score looked likely but when Rhino ran himself out for 72 it wasn’t a certainty. A straight drive to the bowlers’ right was well fielded and he had committed himself too far and the bowler had the bails off. AB was playing nicely and easily scoring at a run a ball. It was a cautious start from Kelbey but he soon started to work the ball around well. The forecasted rain arrived and an early tea was taken. This was appreciated by the bowlers who had time for a decent feed.
The game was reduced to 47 overs and we started after tea with nine overs left to bat. AB and Kelbey took the score to 222 (unlucky for some) when AB was out caught. It was a well made fifty from AB and he looked comfortable at the crease throughout. KP was ticking things along well and with a handy contribution from Umi took the score onto 272. Having slipped down the order a bit Tony only had to face one ball and our score closed on 278. Duckworth Lewis adjusted this to 286 after the lost overs.
A quick turnaround between innings and we took to the field in confident mood. There were a couple of loose ones early from Q but it wasn’t long before Kelbey had them on the back foot. Two wickets in an over gave us a real boost and when Q picked one up a couple of overs later it was 24 for 3. They started to put together a good partnership with Kennedy and the pro batting well. Our poor fielding and catching in recent weeks continued and this didn’t help the bowlers. It was a good pitch to bat on and when Henry and Sam came on to replace the openers they couldn’t contain the scoring. The partnership passed 100 in the 24th over and the pressure seemed to be getting to us. Some sloppy bits of fielding and missed chances made life even more difficult.
Rhino was bowling well but the batsmen were picking the balls well to take a risk for the boundary. With 111 on the board at drinks they were still below the run rate. Rhino had to get the team focused and to lift the fielding display. The batsmen had to keep taking risks and try to get the required rate down. The next 4 overs leaked 38 runs but in his sixth over Rhino got the breakthrough. It was the important wicket of Kennedy who had made 64 off 68 balls. This gave us a lift and Kelbey came back on to try and get another breakthrough.
He put pressure on them from his first ball and beat the outside edge on a number of occasions. It was too much for the veteran Rutnagur as his stumps were sent crashing. This put lots of pressure on the pro who now looked more interested in reaching 3 figures than victory. They couldn’t keep up with the required rate and the pro didn’t put much pressure on us. The 200 came up in the 41st over which left them needing nearly nine an over with 5 wickets remaining. Rhino came back on and broke the partnership, which ended any hope they had of reaching our score. When the pro was out with the score on 247 the win was secured. Despite another 4 dropped catches and a below par performance in the field we kept up our 100% home record.
