Match report It was a clear warm day when we left Forthill but the reputation of the Stoneywood ground being one of the coldest was looming. There was a quick stop off en route for some much needed food and a read of the paper. The temperature had dropped a few degrees when we arrived, mostly because of the cold breeze blowing across the ground. There were a few showers around but most were blowing past.

There looked to be a bit in the wicket so it was a good one to win and Kelbey soon had the two openers back in the pavilion. There was a brief but heavy shower that had almost passed by the time the covers were put on. Stander was obviously keen to move things along with a few attacking shots, not all being successful. With another big shot attempted Q was on target bowling the danger man. 25 for 3 was a really good start but Youngster Leask was playing quite patiently and was quick to seize on any loose deliveries. Henry replaced KP but didn’t quite find his line and length. Leask then surprised everyone with an attacking shot and took advantage of the short straight boundary to hit Q for six. This prompted another change with Sam coming on and bowling well.

Henry was replaced by his brother but Dougie too came in for a bit of tap. Rhino came on and bowled well picking up a couple of wickets and breaking the century partnership that had developed. A good caught and bowled accounting for Leask who had made a nice half century. Wickets fell steadily to the end of the innings with the bowling changes working well.

The teas were very good with the selection of cakes being particularly appreciated by the bowlers. KP had his eye on some extra cakes that had been left by the umpires after he’d polished off all of ours. Wally and Howie set about establishing a solid platform for our innings with a fifty run partnership. The introduction of Stander brought the wicket with Wally edging one behind. His good spell also brought the important wicket of Ryan in a similar fashion. The return of Redhead brought further wickets with AB and Howie both departing.

KP and Tony had a big job to rebuild the innings. Unfortunately both were to be undone by dubious umpiring decisions. KP was first to perish given run out, it looked close but he was confident that his bat was in and had time to watch the ball hit the stumps. The umpire wasn’t in a good position to give the decision and obviously didn’t believe the benefit of the doubt was necessary. Tony was then ‘gunned’ in what can only be described as the worst LBW decision this reporter has ever seen. He may not be the tallest in the team but a ball hitting him high up the thigh can’t surely be hitting the stumps. That’s not to mention the fact that it looked as though it was going down leg side, also indicated by the movement of the wicketkeeper. How there can have been no doubt in the umpire’s mind is a mystery to all who witnessed this aberration.

Leask was brought on and bowled Blackie with his first ball. The two Philip’s then put together a useful partnership of 19 but Henry was out bowled by Willemse on his return to the attack. Stander came back on and dispatched Sam also bowled. This left 22 runs needed for victory with 4 and a bit overs left and Dougie and Q at the crease. It’s safe to say that hopes were not high of us making those 22 runs.

With the first ball negotiated by Q he got forward to the next one and found a handy edge for 1 to third man. Dougie got an important single from the last ball to keep the strike for the next over. A quick discussion between overs and it was decided that Willemse was the one that had to go. Dougie was eyeing up the short straight boundary and took his chance. His first shot made the boundary for four but he didn’t quite get hold of his second one and hit a high chance towards long on. Fortunately for us long on couldn’t make his ground and take a clean catch and we scampered 2 runs. This brought about a few tactical changes in the field with Stander going out to long off and long on being replaced. The next strike was right out the middle and sailed over Stander for 6. A single to long off gave Q the strike for the last 2 balls. The first was defended solidly and the second found a good edge that raced away for 4 to third man.

With 17 off the over we only needed 3 now to win but Stander was bowling the next over. Dougie hit the first ball firmly to long on but we turned down the single to keep Dougie on strike. The second ball was also hit well but this time in the air to long off. A straight forward catch was put down and we ran through for a single. This was perhaps a little risky to expose Q to Stander at this stage of the over. Q didn’t seem to know much about the next ball, a very full and quick ball that struck him on the toe. Probably sliding down leg and the umpire agreed, a decision went our way. The bonus was that the ball rebounded into the covers for a single and Dougie was back on strike. The next 2 balls were swung at and missed but much to the delight of everyone the third ball was hit through the covers for the winning run.

Surely one of our greatest escapes and a surprising but much enjoyed victory. A defeat here could have put an end to any hopes of promotion.
