Match report The cloudy start to the day brightened to clear blue skies for the start of the game. Rhino returned to the side and replaced Sam who was at a wedding. The track looked very flat and the outfield especially fast, so we were confident of posting a big total after Rhino won the toss. Some poor deliveries early on were appreciated by Howie, who raced to 20 before a bit of extra bounce saw him caught at slip. A couple of high full tosses that went for extras saw Maharaj get an early warning from the umpires.

Wally was a little more circumspect to begin with but he wasn’t deterred from his trademark flick, the first of which only just fell short of a maximum. Some wayward bowling that produced a few boundary wides, helped the score race to 103 from just 14 overs. Rhino was in a confident mood and after taking time to play himself in started to find the boundary. Just as the pressure was starting to show on the fielders Rhino took on the reverse sweep and ended up being bowled. It was possibly an ill advised shot at this stage of the innings and was compounded by the quick departure of AB to an ill judged run out. The old adage “never run on a miss-field” was never more appropriate, as the direct hit from mid off saw him well short of his ground.

The loss of these two quick wickets gave Steny a lift and meant we had to carefully rebuild the innings. After hitting the first ball he faced for four, Dougie took his time and played himself in before lifting the momentum with some good boundaries. He took a particular liking to the bowling of McDonald with a tremendous clean hit straight six back over his head. Together with Wally they put on 99 vital runs and both completed good fifties, Dougie’s came from just 41 balls while Craig’s was 73. Wally was tempted by one that he maybe should have left, a very late cut finding its way to first slip.

Finbar had found the going tough and the pressure eventually told when he was out caught. Tony was too quick between the wickets for Dougie who failed to make his ground to a big throw from long off to the wicket keeper. Another two quick wickets had fallen as we let the pressure off them once again. Tony made a quick 17 runs before edging behind and Blackie managed to drag one onto his stumps. Another 2 quick wickets left KP and HP with plenty of work to do with 9 wickets down and 8 overs remaining. However, the pair batted beautifully to put on 65 and take us to a really competitive 328.

The final push was helped by a few mistakes in the field and a curious decision to leave an injured fielder to patrol the cover boundary. We certainly scored more than we looked like achieving at one stage but less than we should have got given the conditions and the excellent start. The mammoth 44 wides and a total of 65 extras went some way to hide a few batsmen’s blushes.

We knew that Thyssen, the pro, would be the important wicket. Kelbey once again produced an early breakthrough, which meant an early entrance for him. A good caught and bowled from Q followed by McDonald clean bowled meant they were even more reliant on the pro for runs. Kelbey was looking fired up and produced a fantastic delivery to knock over Thyssen’s off stump. This more or less put an end to their chances of reaching our total and the only real resistance came from the overseas amateur.

Dougie was introduced with immediate result, veteran Ian Phillip being trapped LBW, then other veteran Moses, following in similar fashion. He clearly felt a little aggrieved as we witnessed possibly the slowest trudge back to the pavilion ever seen at Forthill. Even slower than the Brechin batsmen whose already injured toe was hit twice by a Mike King Yorker back in 2001, and believe me his was a slow hobble back to the pavilion.

Dougie cleaned up the next batsmen just as Moses reached the pavilion door and he too embarked on a somewhat perplexing slow walk back to the pavilion. The next man in was obviously keen not to be the fifth duck of the innings and embarked on a ludicrous quick single. Maharaj quite rightly was not interested (NI) and an easy run out was effected by Q and Wally. The former ensuring the latter didn’t have it too easy with a slightly less than desirable return throw. Wally was on the ball though making a clean take and whipping the bails off.

Henry came in for a bit of miss treatment as Angus enjoyed swinging the bat during the dying moments of the Steny innings. Maharaj was last man out to a good catch by Finbar. The eleventh man deciding not to bat after his earlier injury sustained in the field. A convincing win by 230 runs that kept our good run of form going and was enjoyed by the crowd that had gathered for a BBQ, the sponsors and the regular supporters club.
