Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 55 runs
Match report
After last weeks win over Freuchie spirits and confidence was high. We won the toss and decided to have a bat, everyone was a bit unsure as to how the wicket would play and what would be a competitive score. Things didn’t start well when Howie was bowled in the first over when one snuck through his defences, hitting inside edge and pad on the way to the stumps. Things got worse in the next over when a terrible mix up ended with Drummy being run out. There are few more amusing sights in cricket than a shambolic run out with both batsmen running towards the same end but I can assure you no one was laughing at this stage.
Miersy and Robert (the man with the most nicknames) tried to steady things by playing some expansive shots! This kept the scoring rate moving along well but did nothing for the already frail nerves of the rest of the team. Miersy was eventually out after trying to hit one too many over the top. ‘Captain Europe’ played some good shots before he too was out caught. Chik departed shortly after to a leading edge and this brought Dalts to the crease for his first bat in a few weeks. He too played a few shots and struck the ball well, unfortunately the dreaded LBW was to be his downfall again.
Tony then marched purposefully to the crease hoping that his fractured rib would hold up to a long stint in the middle. Sadly he too was out to the dreaded LBW after hitting the ball well off the toe end.
With the scoreboard showing 7 wickets down and not much more than half of the overs gone Nelly Martin walked out at number 9. More accustomed to opening the batting for the second team he and Umair put together the partnership of the innings. They both batted very sensibly and put the bad ball away. Once Umi was out for a well earned 50 Sam joined Nelly and they continued to accumulate runs putting on about 35. With an over and a bit left when Neil was out Sam and I had only to collect as many runs as possible and we finished on 209. This was a tremendous effort after the succession of wickets to fall in the first half of the innings and must surely have dented the confidence of the opposition.
With a good total we knew that a few early wickets would make things extremely difficult for Stirling. The openers batted positively and there were a couple of false shots. Since returning from his break in Pakistan Umair has been in revitalised form and he took a quite outstanding catch at mid-wicket to remove John Taylor. Definitely in the top 3 catches off my bowling. Sajid Ali was the big danger man and we needed to get him early.
After having very little luck in the first half of the season it looked liked things were changing for me as another poor leg-side delivery earned me a wicket. Sajid getting a good knick on one to Drummy behind the stumps and we were celebrating. A wicket with the very next ball and the game had turned completely. The game was all but wrapped up with some tidy bowling from Howie. Special mention must also be made for Umair’s one over that he only just managed to complete. In the process of appealing for an LBW he managed to go over both his ankles and spent the rest of the game on the sidelines. This meant a guest appearance from our 12th man Dick Auchinleck. At least his appeal was successful but an unfortunate way to complete an otherwise excellent day for him and the team.
