Match report
It was a magnificent sunny afternoon as we arrived for our first ever game in Dollar. We had heard much about the excellent wicket and picturesque setting of the school ground. However, we arrived to find work being carried out on the outfield and the square fenced off with no sign of a wicket having been cut. This prompted much speculation as to whether the opposition were currently sitting at Forthill waiting for us to appear. In the meantime, Howie had noticed another pitch further over and had gone to explore the possibilities of a game. Fortunately our match secretary was on hand and it was soon confirmed that they were on their way and that the game would be played on the smaller ground.
As the ground was quite small some local rules were to be adopted to save the near by windows from a barrage of sixes from the likes of Captain Europe and Dalton the destroyer. The Captain’s agreed that all sixes would count only as a dot ball, some would say harsh, Bobby said – well I best not repeat it.
Sam went out for the toss of the coin as he had been delegated skipper for the day and in true Sunday friendly style lost the toss. So we got the bowling boots on and prepared for a hot 40 overs in the afternoon sun. There was time for a warm up while the opposition waited on the kit bag to arrive. This consisted of some left-arm bowling with the match ball and LJ proving that he maybe should have been a left-arm spinner. It was a tidy start, LJ bowled right-arm over and proved us all wrong and was unlucky to have a catch dropped at slip.
Blackie came on and bowled well on a relatively slow wicket picking up 2 wickets. It fell to me to take the second most astonishing catch of the weekend to dismiss one of the openers. Picking the ball up late out of the trees I quickly made ground to the right and took a one handed catch at full stretch. Sam thought he would have a try for catch of the weekend taking a particularly impressive one at cover. Unfortunately the judges didn’t award extra points for the dive and he had to settle for third place.
There were ten bowlers used as Sam swapped things around. The whirling dervish picked up a late wicket and Sam bowled himself last over and picked up a wicket, Ali taking 2 good catches on the short boundary.
172 was the total set and Sam decided he would open the batting with Dalton. We had a sweepy on how long it would take Dalts to hit a six and be cursing the fact that it was a dot. Sadly before we could make a decision he had clipped one off his legs that landed somewhere over the road. The top three fell quickly and it was left to the first team and third team opening batsmen to rebuild the innings. Which they did in impressive style, taking advantage of the short boundary as they put on over 90 for the 4th wicket.
There was a clatter of wickets after this and we were still some way short of the target. The self-appointed scorer came out to join me at number 9 and we needed six an over. We took advantage of the short boundary and some slack fielding and quickly got the scoring rate down. It was too good to last and after a cameo 16 I was caught at extra-cover. Fodder then top-edged a short ball from the spinner and was easily caught, the six rule appearing to play on his mind as that ball would normally have disappeared over the houses. With a dozen or so runs needed from the last 4 overs Steeley was still confident he could do it. Unfortunately Ali was out caught with the score on 162. A jolly nice day, jolly nice ground and a jolly good game.
