Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v West Lothian on Sat 23 Jul 2005 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 4 wickets

Match report With our two Scotland Under-19 stars away at a training session it meant two changes to last weeks winning team. AD & LJ were the initials to be added to the team sheet. A good wicket and lightning fast outfield ensured that a high scoring contest was on the cards. So we were a bit surprised when West Lothian won the toss and decided to field first.

Howie was out early as he miss timed a ball that looked like it should have gone to the boundary. Ryan and Pete moved things along well until Pete was out caught. Tony kept the scoreboard moving but also kept the wickets column moving when he holed out to deep-square. AD and Watty then put a good partnership together with plenty of bad balls being punished and some sloppy fielding helping them out. AD was out caught but Chik picked up where he left off and we were going along nicely.

With ten overs left we knew that a big total was on the cards with Ryan well set. Chik became the fifth batsmen to be out caught with a well made 33. Ryan then managed to pick out the man in the deep hitting a short ball down long-on’s throat. It then looked like we would be short of the sort of total we should have scored but LJ played some good shots, caressing a drive through the covers for 4. Aman then matched LJ’s drive and raised him with a good crack over mid-wicket that fell just short of a maximum. A few batsmen got good starts but didn’t go on to make a big score. Six batsmen out caught meant that wickets fell too regularly but we were happy with 288.

Sam removed one of the openers early and then a run out helped to put the pressure on the batsmen. We knew their skipper would be a key wicket and when he came down the track a bit early, Aman slipped one out wide and Drummy took a good stumping. The pro started cautiously and we knew his was the important wicket. Howie came into the attack and kept things nice and tidy and picked up a wicket to a superb catch by the young prodigy. Dave Fleming nearly took them to victory earlier in the season and did the same again, making 50 before being run out to some good work from AD. He and Stewart put together a massive partnership that was to prove the match winning one. Ryan bowled the second last over and had a very sharp chance to end the Kiwi’s innings when he dropped a well struck return catch. To rub salt into the wound Stewart hit his last ball for six to bring them within touching distance. Needing 7 off the last with Sam bowling they managed a single off the first ball to give Stewart the strike and he completed a tremendous innings of 160 not out and victory for the visitors.

They needed 7 an over for most of the second 25 overs and achieved this far too easily. There were a few too many bad balls and extras but the fielders let the bowlers down badly with no fewer than 35 runs being gifted through simple, basic errors.
