Dunfermline v Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 30 Jul 2005 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 1 wicket

Match report It was a cold gloomy day when we arrived to the unusual sight of the opposition raking the outfield. It wasn’t easy to find the square amidst the small piles of grass and the fact that it was rather green. We had heard quite a bit about the poor quality of the wicket at McKane park and weren’t sure what to expect. Once the opposition had finished their warm up of picking up the piles of grass we once again lost the toss and were asked to bat.

With Pete away at a wedding and Ryan on Scotland duty we had Neily behind the stumps and Cameron again stepped up to the first team. He took Pete’s place opening the innings with Howie and did a good job facing the pace of Waqas. After doing the hard part and seeing off Waqas, Howie managed to get himself out to a poor delivery. Robert and Umair returned from a successful Scotland U-19 campaign to take their place in the top-order. Unfortunately Bobby was out quickly and what had been a good start didn’t look so good any more. Umair and Cameron batted well but neither could go on to make a big score. The skipper looked in a determined mood and surprised everyone by hooking Waqas for six. This was to be one of the few highlights of our innings as once again we lost wickets regularly. Neily batted well for his 25 and didn’t ever look in any trouble. Waqas did the late damage with 3 wickets in quick succession and we were left 171 all out. Our score was well below par, especially when you consider that extras were the top scorer of the innings with the wides column totalling no fewer than 30 by themselves.

There was plenty in the wicket for the bowlers and towards the end of our innings there were a few balls that misbehaved. We got an early break through but it was clear that Dunfermline were going to play their shots and they easily kept up with the run rate. Sam bowled well and was unlucky not to have any reward. The wicket really suited Cameron and he found some swing and bowled superbly, picking up 4 wickets. Aman and Howie bowled well and picked up 2 a piece, Aman with the prize scalp of Waqas. They were 7 down still needing 50 or 60 runs and things looked in our favour. Some good hitting by their late order batsmen kept them in the game and as the 8th and 9th wickets fell it was in the balance. Some hard chances had been dropped that hindered us from wrapping up the game and when one final catch was hit high into the grey sky we had our chance of taking the final wicket. We should have been good enough to win this game but when that final chance was missed it was clear we had not played well enough on the day.
