Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v St. Modans on Sat 13 Aug 2005 at 1pm
Match was Abandoned

Match report A very wet and dull day quickly turned into scorching sunshine and a very humid afternoon. The wicket had been flooded during the week and it looked like there could be a few “muddys”. St Modans won the toss and decided to have a bat first. This surprised us as it looked like there would be a bit of assistance for the bowlers. This suspicion was proved correct as the openers played and missed with frustrating regularity. We would have had an early breakthrough if I hadn’t bowled a no-ball or if one of the edges that flew through the slip region had actually been seen by the slips. There was considerable movement off the wicket and in the air and after about 9 overs we had a shower.

After the rain a breeze had started to blow and with the ball getting a bit damp there wasn’t quite as much movement. Umair managed to drop a fairly simple catch but eventually a false shot found its way into Aman’s hands at mid-off. Umair came on and struggled to find the devastating form that had made him top wicket taker in the European U-23 championships. He did manage to claim a good caught and bowled chance to remove the other opening batsmen.

Once Howie came on the run rate dried and he eventually got the prize wicket of the St Modan’s pro. We didn’t bowl as well as we should have and on a very helpful wicket and a batting line-up that didn’t boast much technique or depth it was frustrating that they managed to get 173.

We knew the pro and overseas amateur were the only real threats in the bowling but we didn’t manage to see them off without losing 6 wickets. Umair batted well for his 25 not out and Nelly was determined to see off the pro when the heavens opened. A shower had crept up on us from behind the pavilion and before too long the ground was soaked and we decided to call it off. You could see that a few miles either side of the ground was still in sunshine but that was game over after we had batted 25 overs. We required 14 runs in 5 overs to be ahead on the D/L method at the 30 over mark so we were reasonably happy that we could have done that. After all is said and done it wasn’t a good performance and had it not rained we could have won but we could also have lost.
