Match report
It was a bright cold day in April (well it felt like April), and the clocks were striking thirteen. We had 2 umpires, 2 scorers, a pile of sandwiches waiting in the corner and an empty visitors dressing room. Some missed calls on Drummy’s phone indicated a problem that was confirmed by the scorer who had managed to arrive on time. A combination of traffic and lack of a sense of direction had delayed the entire 11 opposition players. They eventually did arrive and play was able to start just after half past one. With the notable exception of Ryan, who was busy smacking Namibian bowlers around Aberdeen, it was more or less a full strength side.
Pete slipped hastily into the changing room to announce the batting line-up after winning the toss. Howie and Rob were to start things off with Pete himself sliding down to the middle-order. We didn’t know much about the oppo’ but the pundits seem to think we were favourites. An inauspicious collapse the previous week against Aberdeenshire suggested that there wasn’t much strength in depth.
The wicket was damp, looked a touch green and offered plenty of early assistance to the bowlers. It was hard to predict what sort of total we would need. Bobby got a leading edge and offered a dolly catch first ball that was taken by the bowler. Cameron soon followed him back, being comprehensively cleaned up, after possibly playing the wrong shot at the wrong time to the wrong bowler. Howie was cautious and was starting to look comfortable when an ‘iffy’ LBW cut short his innings. Tony had played and missed a few times but managed to find a few runs before being caught. Once again we were four wickets down with not nearly enough on the board.
As it was a bit early for the finisher to be at the crease Drummy and Umair were the two charged with resurrecting our total. What a marvellous job they made of it too. A partnership of 146 was only broken after a slightly dodgy single resulted in Pete being run out. Both played well and took advantage of some less than frightening bowling. This wasn’t bad timing because it brought Chic in at just the right stage. Umair wasn’t with the game plan as he proceeded to hit a long-hop down the throat of deep square-leg, nevertheless a superb knock. With five or so overs left there was a chance for him to make his first century and help us to a really good total. Neily came and went without adding any runs to his total for the season. Richie joined Chic and the two of them were careful not to give anything away and with some good late hits saw us to a good total. We were hampered by not having enough wickets in hand to push for a bigger total and I felt if one of their batsmen came off then it could be tight.
The wicket played pretty well and there wasn’t a great deal of swing. We picked up a couple of early wickets but the pro looked determined to bat the whole innings. When the openers came off we couldn’t stop the runs coming. The pro, not wanting to be dictated to, looked to take control and hit successive 4’s from umair’s first over. Howie replaced Cam and picked up an important couple of wickets, but he wasn’t able to stem the run flow like he had done so well for most of last season. It took them until the 48th over to pass our total but we gave too many four balls and couldn’t apply enough pressure to the batsmen, making it all too easy. It was with some abhorrence that we started to put away the rope. Ideal way to finish the day!
