Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 51 runs
Match report
It was a warm muggy sort of day with quite a bit of cloud cover but we missed any rain that was about. The wicket was quite hard but still fairly green and it was a good toss to lose as the opposition put us in to bat first. Another excellent opening partnership set a good foundation for a big total. Rhino’s fifty came up in about the fifteenth over as he and Howie took advantage of some indifferent bowling from the openers.
The change in bowling at both ends slowed things slightly but we were still looking good for a total over 300. When Ryan was out caught, ending the opening partnership of 136 it was up to Howie to keep the good work going. Unfortunately he was out LBW trying to turn one to the leg side and failing to connect. Shortly after Bobby C was also out LBW but his certainly didn’t look as convincing as Howie’s, I think it would have struggled to hit another set of stumps.
Pete and Cam started to get us back on track but our scoring rate had started to slip. Pete batting in the middle order gives a good balance to the line-up and he and Cam played well together. It wasn’t until a controversial run out ended the partnership. Cam thought that his dive was enough to beat the direct hit but the umpire disagreed. Pete was another to fall victim to the dreaded LBW not long after, and we were starting to look in a spot of trouble.
The target of 300 now looked a long way off and we needed a good partnership to get us up to a defendable score. With the outfield still very fast it wasn’t going to be easy bowling second. Umair and Chic came up with the partnership we needed but when Chic took one risk too many and was out caught it sparked a bit of a collapse.
The even more controversial run out of Richie Gee almost incited crowd violence. The spectators at the scorebox were in a prime place to make a third umpire call and seemed to agree with Richie’s opinion that he was comfortably in his ground. When LJ and Blackie both fell in quick succession it was left to Umi and I to pillage as many runs from the last over as possible.
There was significant movement for the bowlers early on and we got an excellent start in the field with Richie picking up a wicket in his first over. When I disposed of the pro in the next over, well caught at second slip by Watty, the pressure was really on them. This also gave me a narrow lead over Watty on the pro-counter for the season with my third in the bag.
Watson replaced Richie, who had taken a bit of tap from the opener, which slowed their run rate considerably. We knew they would have to start taking some risks and the first chance was put down at mid-off. The introduction of spin and Blackie’s first bowl in the SNCL soon changed things. We held a couple of good catches and some good probing bowling paid dividends. Blackie took a straight-forward return catch to give him his third and he could be pleased with a very fine first spell in the league. There was to be more spin used as Bobby was brought into the attack and he also picked up a wicket.
Penicuick were never able to keep up with the run rate and by this stage the game was all but won. Some late hitting down the order pushed them passed the two hundred mark and a catch slipping through Rob’s fingers at mid-wicket didn’t cost us. All in all a convincing victory for the Forfs and a good performance in all aspects of the game was very pleasing. We held the crucial catches and proved the old adage “catches win matches”, except off my bowling.
