West of Scotland v Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 01 Jul 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 149 runs

Match report We travelled to Glasgow in convoy and following the instructions of Pottsy’s SatNav because nobody could remember the way to the ground. Given Drummy’s recent history with directions it was probably a wise decision. We arrived at Hamilton Crescent with the notable absence of Howie who was playing for the second team so he could get a bowl and because he had to work.

Drummy won the toss and was keen to bat first on a pretty good looking wicket. It was quite a warm day with a nice cooling breeze. Drummy was back at the top of the order with Rhino and the two got us off to a good start putting on 83 for the first wicket. Rhino was looking to take the attack to the bowlers as usual. Drummy looked to be in good form and on his way to a fifty if he hadn’t been caught and bowled.

The Streak was playing quite cautiously but by this time Watty was in full stride and the two put on 60 for the second wicket. We had set ourselves up nicely for a good total keeping plenty of wickets in hand into the last twenty overs. Cam couldn’t complain too much about his LBW and Fodder came in and looked in good touch from the start.

Ben had arrived at the ground by this time and was surprised to see a few second team players featuring for West today, which suggested they weren’t quite at full strength. We were entertained by some lusty blows from both batsmen and Rhino brought up his third century of the season. After passing three figures he made his intent clear by depositing the bowler back over his head for six of the best. This continued with another good strike over mid-wicket for six, but was then caught on the boundary trying to repeat the shot next ball. A slightly disappointing end to another very fine innings by Watty.

Umi made his way to the crease with plenty of work still to be done in the crucial last few overs. He and Robert combined well running quickly between the wickets and demonstrating some excellent stroke play to take us along to a good total.

A good spread was enjoyed at tea while watching a bit of the football, then it was time for the bowlers to get themselves ready. It was a steady start to the innings, AB didn’t quite find his length running up the hill and was replaced by Rhino with almost immediate effect. Dougie Lockhart was quick to dispatch the first loosener for four but the next long-hop was cut straight into the hands of Umi at point.

That brought West’s inform pro, Barrington Rowland to the crease, but he didn’t last long as Watty dispatched him to a fine catch by Miersy. This draws Rhino level at the top of the pro-counter table with 3 scalps. The pressure was now mounting on the batsmen and a good fielding display ensured the bowlers good work didn’t go to waste. Rhino was starting to get his rhythm and looked intent on bouncing out the opener. Although that tactic didn’t yield a result he still picked up another two wickets and we had West in big trouble.

Miers then chipped in with the opening batsmans’ wicket thanks to an astonishing catch by ….. me! Ian was perfectly placed to get a prize winning photo but he too was so stunned that he didn’t manage to catch the Kodak moment. The batsmen tried to hit Miers back over his head but miss-cued it high in the air, between and over the heads of Beast at mid on and myself at mid off. There was a good bit of ground to be made up and I felt it best for the photograph to take my hat off. It was almost a full-length dive required to pluck the ball from the air and there was surely no way back for West now.

LJ proved his worth in the field even if he wasn’t getting a chance with the ball, a good throw from the boundary found the batsmen struggling to get halfway down the pitch when he was run out. It was time for Blackie to come on and put the game to rest with another fine display. He mopped up the tail inside seven overs with good flight and turn to finish with four wickets and seal the victory.

It was an outstanding display from the Forfs in all aspects of the game which was illustrated by the margin of victory.
