Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v Aberdeenshire on Sat 29 Jul 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 84 runs
Match report
It was another overcast but warm sort of day. The pitch was firm but with still a bit of grass and a green tinge, so it looked like there could be a bit for the bowlers but overall a good batting track. The forecast suggested there could be showers around later in the day. Pete's run of wins came to an end as we lost the toss and were asked to bat first. This wasn't such a bad thing I don't think, there was a bit of debate about what to do if we won the toss and this suited our previous winning formula.
The influential opening partnership of Watson and Garden started us off and put on a good 94 runs. Rhino was looking to dominate, as he does, and hit the bowler over the top. Maybe the shot selection on this occasion wasn't quite right as he was caught at mid off. Howie completed a very good fifty that included some exquisite shots through the off-side. An even bigger score was on the cards until he was out LBW trying to work one to the leg side, no complaints about this one.
Drummy got his head down and with Rob put on about 60 for the third wicket. Shot of the day goes to Rob for his six over extra, however another promising start failed to produce the runs that he should have. Umair was out shortly after, possibly the pakora dilemma was waying on his mind too much.
Beast strode to the crease in his usual purposeful manner and he and Drummy put together another good partnership. We needed to start increasing the scoring rate in the last ten overs and these two did that very well. Pete brought up his second league fifty of the season and a well deserved one it was. We picked up some useful boundaries in the last few overs and set a challenging total of 250 to win.
The tea standards dropped markedly thanks to the pakora famine and lack of quality rolls from the rest of the team, the Tunnocks Caramel logs just don't cut it compared to the chicken pakoras and chilli sauce.
The temperature was quite warm when we started after tea and immediately there was some swing for the bowlers. It was just the start we needed when the scoreboard read 3 for 9 from 5 overs. Coetzer can count himself unlucky to have received one of the deliveries of the season third ball, pitched leg and hit off (more or less). Howie took a good catch at slip when Richie found the edge, and a run out instigated by torpedo arm Cannon counted for the wickets.
This brought the two South Africans together and we knew that one more wicket would have put us well in control. Jan and Kruger put together a good partnership of over 80 and it took a very well judged catch from Rhino on the deep mid-wicket boundary by the school to break it. Had it not been a catch then it looked destined to be six. Umair then returned the favour by taking an equally well judged catch at the other side of the ground to dismiss Hays off the bowling of Blackie.
Not to be out done Pete took the catch of the day to dismiss the danger man, pro Kruger van Wyk, off the bowling of Rhino. A one handed diving catch that wouldn't have been easy for first slip. This also gave Watty the lead on the pro-counter for the season and put an end to Aberdeen's challenge on our total. We bowled well to the end of the game and bowled them out thanks to another couple of good run outs from Chic and Tony with them just looking to collect a few bonus points.
This was much more like the sort of performance we have come to expect this season and must now be maintained to the end of the season. With a chance of promotion still alive if we keep winning it's still all to play for.
