Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v Prestwick on Sat 05 Aug 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 3 wickets

Match report It was one of the warmest days we had seen all season and even a light warm up worked up a good sweat. With Rhino away on Scotland duty LJ was recalled to the first team and Umi was released by Scotland on Saturday morning to play in the game. No one had realised that Mr Kipling had been selected but the cakes on display in the changing rooms were 'exceedingly good'. It turns out he’s not a bad player as well, and is most welcome to bring his gastronomic selection to every home game. In the absence of Rhino there was some record lateness from a few people but the rope was put out with utmost efficiency.

Our worries during the warm up about losing the toss were proved correct and we were asked to field in the hot sunshine. Thankfully a bit of cloud cover had moved over to give a little interruption from the sun’s rays. It was a steady start with neither opener really finding the middle of the bat. There was a bit of assistance early on for the opening bowlers. Umi came on first change and bowled an excellent spell. LJ was second change and bowled a good spell. Had he not had a wicket from a no ball then it might have been a very good spell. He wasn’t the only one to give a few freebies away as the extras became the second highest scorer of the innings.

Aamer Hanif came in after LJ snagged the first wicket and set his stall out to bat the whole innings and promptly did so. He looked the only one capable of making an impact with the bat. Blackie bowled steadily and Bobby came on to try and take advantage of what was a good track for the spinners. The skipper decided to keep these two on for the last ten overs and the pro was able to accelerate with the help of the number 6 in the last few overs.

After the veritable feast of Cake and Pakoras were enjoyed for tea, LJ was invited to open the batting. After his previous two innings for the second team he was obviously staking a claim as an all-rounder. He hit a couple of fours but was back in the pavilion before I had finished my second slice of cream gateaux. Bobby joined Howie in the middle and as usual looked a class act, but as all too often happens it didn’t amount to enough runs. A full toss that should have bounced on the roof of the pavilion only made it as far as the grateful hands of mid-off.

Drummy and Howie then put on fifty to rescue us from a poor start. Sadly this was brought to an abrupt end by a run out. Beast was out in unusual circumstances just as he looked as if he was about to unleash. A bat pad catch that dollied up to the wicket-keeper. Umi was intent on using his feet to the spinners and he and Howie put together a bit of a partnership. When both fell in succession and Chic also came and went the scoreboard showed 160-7.

A partnership of 68 between Tony and Richie and one of the best innings by a number nine you’re likely to see, saw us home to a well earned victory. Richie’s contribution of 39 not out gives a good indication of how well he batted. The undoubted highlight was a six over mid-on off the bowling of Aamer Hanif, hit with consummate ease. I can see we’ll have to get a few more people signed up for a triathlon. This has officially elevated Richie to the status of ‘genuine all-rounder’ (Yip – another one) and I would be surprised to see him batting as low as nine in future.
