Arbroath United v Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 12 Aug 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 20 runs

Match report It was an important weekend in our push for promotion and the short trip to Arbroath was much anticipated. The skies were part cloudy but with some good warm sunshine, but there was the usual chilly breeze at Arbroath that kept the temperature down. It was a good toss to win because the wicket looked good for batting, nice and hard.

Howie and Rhino got us off to a good start putting on fifty for the first wicket but after doing the hard work Rhino edged one behind. Bobby then flashed at one second ball and departed in similar fashion.

Drummy and Howie came together and had to do a bit of rebuilding. The bowling was quite tight and scoring wasn’t easy. The pro was finding a bit of pace of the hard deck and hurried the batsmen a few times. These two put on a solid stand of seventy that was ended in disappointing style. Howie offered up a simple catch to mid-on that was surprisingly dropped and then very next ball offered another even simpler chance to the bowler who made no mistake.

Umi was in next but didn’t really find his rhythm and was Anderson’s third wicket in his good spell of bowling. Drummy then departed run out after completing an important half-century, Gally saw a quick single that no one else did and Pete looked to be struggling to make his ground most of the way. Gally then tried to hit one back over the bowlers head only to find the hands of mid-on. Chik was in and out quite quickly and has looked a little out of sorts recently, could be sleep deprivation.

LJ was the second run out victim when Tony forgot that it wasn’t Linford at the other end. Blackie batted well and he and Tony pushed us along in the last few overs to reach a decent total. I thought we were maybe thirty runs short of what we would have liked.

The excellent teas were enjoyed by all but the bowlers had to make do with small portions again. We got off to the perfect start with an LBW in the first over. It should have been made even better in the fourth over when the Arbroath skipper edged one and a simple catch was put down at second slip by Tony. Ben McGill continued to play a few shots as he does but we managed to keep the scoring rate down. Gally came on and bowled well but Umi didn’t quite find his rhythm at the bowling either.

Gally eventually picked up the wicket of Spink who had been struggling to time the ball. Gally was unlucky not to have another wicket when LJ dropped a simple chance at gully. Ben McGill scored a dangerous fifty before a slightly rash shot saw him bowled by Gally. The pro and Burnett then put together a partnership as Arbroath closed on our total.

Blackie replaced Gally and immediately settled into a good area and created some pressure. Gally completed a good spell of ten overs on the bounce into the wind, just as well he had that 3km swim in the morning. Rhino came back on to try and pick up a wicket but couldn’t find the breakthrough. The scoreboard continued to tick over and with plenty of overs left it was going to be a tight finish. The skip then throw me the ball and we knew that a couple of quick wickets would put the pressure back on Arbroath. Just what the skipper ordered, a good length delivery nipped back through the gate and bowled McKay leg stump. The very next over Blackie picked up the wicket of Burnett, also bowled. When Kev Ritchie didn’t pick the slower ball and gifted a catch to Bobby at cover the scoreboard read 145-6.

With the pressure back on the batsmen and some of the younger lads to come in we knew there was a good chance. LJ came on but found it difficult with the pressure on. Clarke played his shots from the start and hit the ball well, often through mid-wicket, and kept them in front of the run rate. The score moved to 176 before Blackie picked up the next wicket with a sharp stumping by Drummy. Rhino came back on and bowled well and should have picked up a wicket but for LJ’s second drop of the day. Clarke was still there and looking dangerous but when he chipped one high out to long on, Chik was there to take a good catch and probably the match winning one.

Rhino cleaned up Anderson with the score on 189 victory was close. Blackie then polished the innings off in his next over with another good stumping by Drummy.

It was a good close game that we managed to win despite not being at our best in any facet of the game. Missed chances and 35 extras, of which 22 were wides, made things all too difficult for ourselves. Some good bowling and fielding in the second half of the innings pulled the game back in our favour but had one of the Arbroath batsmen hung around to the end then it could have been a different story.
