Match report It was quite a nice day for the last home game of the season. The pitch didn't look up to the usual standards, with some bare patches and plenty of green on the rest. There were also some large cracks in the bare areas that everyone was a bit suspicious of. Drummy won the toss and decided to have a bat.

With Mr Kipling away judging a sponge cake competition Jingle Jangle Tilston was back in the first team and Aman “loves a sandwich” Bailwal replaced LJ, who was off sunning himself somewhere.

Watty was still in very good touch but Howie looked a little hampered by his injured hand and with the score on 40 he was out caught behind. Bobby doesn't seem to enjoy batting at three that much and his run of low scores continued as he padded up to one that crashed into the stumps.

Beast came in and didn't look in much trouble before another LBW put an end to his season. The umpire took a rather long time to make his decision but when he did Beast stood in disbelief for even longer. Had he not been playing a sweep shot across the line he probably would have got away with it. What annoys me is, if the umpire needed that long to think then there must have been doubt. A good stride down the track suggested that there was some doubt, therefore it should really be not out.

I don’t think Umair could complain too much about his LBW. The bowler jagged one back at him that Watty claimed was the only ball that had done that all day. Not much solace for Umi as he trudged back to the dressing room. So we were now four down with only 71 on the board and plenty of rebuilding to do.

We still had some batting to come and Tony’s really good at keeping the scoreboard ticking over as he pushes singles and runs well between the wickets. He and Ryan had put on fifty for the fifth wicket but the pro beat Tony in the flight and he was bowled. A good recovery but we needed a bigger partnership if we were to post a good total. AB was promoted to 7 after his fireworks against Meigle the week before. Sadly the gifted full toss he received first ball was hit straight to mid-wicket and we didn’t even get to see a sparkler this week.

When Ryan was out caught behind soon after, West were not surprisingly delighted. This left Drummy to bat with the tail and try to get us to a respectable total. Blackie had batted quite well recently and with fourteen or so overs left had a good opportunity to make a score and support Drummy. It wasn’t long before a rush of blood saw him try to deposit the pro over mid-wicket for six, only to find the waiting hands of the over seas amateur on the boundary. Sam was out LBW in the next over to one that looked a bit too high, and I was left to try and bat more than ten overs with Pete. Having forgotten the train line map that Watty had suggested I use, it wasn’t long before I nicked one behind (I thought I did well to get an edge on it).

We knew if we got a few quick wickets that we had a chance of defending the total. Ryan bowled really well and found some movement off the wicket. Dougie Lockhart certainly wasn’t going to give it away easily and was very watchful. Rhino beat the bat on a number of occasions and I had a thick edge fly over gully. It wasn’t long before Rhino got the first break through, a cracker that beat the defences of Watson and hit the top of middle and off. He made life difficult for the pro from the start and gave away nothing. There wasn’t any out-swing at my end but a couple of “nip-backers” came close. Lockhart was standing firm and made sure to put away the bad ball.

Watty then had the pro trapped LBW and we had a chance with only 44 on the board. Sam came into the attack but didn't find his line and length. Drummy kept Rhino going at the other end to try and get the crucial wicket of Lockhart.

Umi then replaced Sam but he wasn't able to produce a wicket either. Blackie replaced Rhino but bowled too many bad balls and was pumped for 18 off 2 overs. The over seas amateur scratched about a bit at the start but was able to hang around with Lockhart and put together a match winning partnership. AB came into the attack and bowled very well. He found some of the same movement that Rhino had, but didn’t pick up any wickets.

Lockhart completed an excellent half-century and saw them through the difficult patch and almost home for victory. I replaced Umi at the other end and was able to get a bit of swing, eventually beating the amateur with a slower ball that he played on to his stumps.

Sam picked up a bonus wicket when he came back on but it was all too late by that stage and the vicious “in-duckers” of Beast weren’t enough to stop them getting the final few runs. With 82 from Ryan and only 2 other batsmen making double figures our total wasn’t enough to pose any real threat.

We bid farewell to the rope for another season as it was locked away in the score box. Then it was time for one last push of the covers, the flat tyre making it more onerous than usual. As the chalks were put in place and the pipes rolled out we all said a little prayer in the vain hope that it would be the last time we had to push those old flaky iron carbuncles. That brought an end to another season of first team cricket at Forthill and it was a disappointing way to finish an otherwise very enjoyable season.
