Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v Grange on Sun 28 May 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 6 wickets
Match report
The new trend of the opposition turning up late to Forthill continued as they were temporarily misplaced in the Fintry triangle. Maybe the ground doesn’t appear on the current sat-nav technology that Grange install into all their players Range Rovers. We saw the return of John Gray Jnr. to Forthill after he moved to Edinburgh a few years ago. It was good to see he still sports a sizable buffon. We had a leisurely warm up as we waited for Grange to get them selves ready, there wasn’t time for them all to have a pre-match rub down with the team masseuse. Drummy then informed us that we were batting first after he lost the toss.
The innings progressed with an all too familiar pattern. A steady fall of wickets meant that we didn’t keep wickets in hand for the final 15 overs or so. There were only 3 batsmen made a score of note. Howie batted brilliantly and was quick to dispatch the early loose bowling to the boundary. The outfield was fairly quick and the boundary a bit smaller than usual. We raced to about eighty from the first twelve overs which was a great start. Despite the second string look to the Grange bowling the continued tumble of wickets hampered further good progress. Howie completed an excellent century after a scare when he was on sixty odd. It looked to all on the ground, apart from the umpire, as if he had been run out. Drummy and Umair both made useful 41’s in the middle-order but Bobby was the only other batsmen to make it to double figures.
There wasn’t much in the wicket and it was hard work for the bowlers. The former Scotland pair of McRae and Maiden opened the innings. Maiden was looking to push things along with a few big shots so Drummy stood up to the stumps to try and keep him in his crease, which had the desired effect. McRae was sporting new style pads that had been specially polished for the occasion. Without an early breakthrough Howie and LJ came into the attack, LJ coming out again quite quickly. He didn’t quite find his line and length and was replaced with Umi. Howie kept things tied down and was unlucky on a couple of occasions. Some nicely flighted deliveries didn’t get the reward they deserved but he did eventually get the first wicket.
It wasn’t the usual sprightly performance in the field with a few people looking like they needed the use of the Grange Masseuse. Gally came back on and picked up a wicket but by this stage Grange were well on top of the run rate. LJ returned at the pavilion end and bowled better than his first spell but was eventually replaced by Bobby. McRae completed a well compiled century in the third last over of the game. John Gray’s claims to being an all-rounder were confirmed when he walked out to bat at number 5 after a late wicket fell.
The fielding and bowling wasn’t quite up to standard. We weren’t able to put enough pressure on the batsmen and didn’t force them to take any risks. The video evidence will have to be reviewed during the week but I think Nelly gets the prize for the most despairing dives. There was a bit of discussion about what our target score should have been but most thought that we hadn’t made as many as we should have given the nature of their bowling. This aside it was far too comfortable for the Grange batsmen and they probably would have chased a bigger score. A disappointing early exit in the Cockspur Cup put an end to any ambitions of a trip down South in the later rounds.
