Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Brechin on Sun 14 May 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 9 wickets
Match report
Forthill XI opened their 2006 campaign at home to Brechin and with a sunny day, good wicket and quick outfield on display a high scoring encounter was anticipated. A lower than normal crowd was inside the arena to see Simmy (looking far fitter this season after a tough winter training regime) win the toss and invite the visitors to take first use of the wicket.
The lower than usual attendance was down to the Radio 1 Big Weekend which was taking place on the other side of town, but those who chose Camperdown over Forthill missed a show and a half from the home entertainers.
The opening act was provided by fast bowling duo Kean and Andy - and boy did they put on a show. Kean opened up proceedings and whilst he may look new romantic with his flowing dyed hair, there was nothing Pet Shop Boys about his opening spell and the first two visiting batsmen were quickly back in the hutch.
Andy's approach may be less flamboyant than his opening act partner, however it was no less effective on this occasion and some swinging numbers also proved too much for the Brechin top order. Before the opening act was finished and with the score at 25 for 5 an early finale looked a certainty. The two openers were supported well by the excellent Sim Twins. Young Stevie caught one well with the assistance of his ample frame and Fat Boy Slim also showed a good pair of hands by swooping to take a couple of blinders at mid wicket.
In spite of such a stunning start, the chief choreographer controversially decided a change in line up was needed so an old crooner was introduced to proceedings and he did his job and slowed things down. Forthill's answer to Frank Sinatra was brought on to the stage in the shape of Teddy and his slow numbers were more to the liking of the Brechin batsmen and a slight recovery started to take place. With Martin off and Wallace also taken from the stage it was time for some New Kids On The Block.
Young Kevin took the stage and impressed some old and new fans alike with his stage presence and control and proceeded to put another visitor back into the pavilion. Frank was having problems with wind so the new kid was sacrificed and Frank performed from the other end. This indeed made his prediction come true, because he said to Daddy Sim, if you let me do it My Way things will be better and so it proved as he took the final encore and Brechin were all out for 69.
The earlier than anticipated finish left the organisers with a problem and with the set (of the tea table) not yet having been built, the teams took the field for an early start to act 2.
Brechin opened with a flourish and Stevie was bowled by Brechin's opening performer. Stevie still seemed to be basking in his TV appearance of 24 hours earlier.
This gave the partnership of Watson (another comeback king) and McConnachie (known for his numerous big hits down the years) the chance to perform together for the first time. The two put on a great show and left the crowd screaming for more when the winning runs were scored and a nine wicket win secured.
With the main acts finished for the day, organisers hastily organised a disco within the indoor arena.
The early finish to proceedings allowed the players to disperse and no doubt some would have headed towards the alternative show in town at Camperdown. One thing would be sure, there is now way that the acts at Radio 1's Big weekend would be able to match the entertainment on show at Forthill today where some fine performances were the order of the day.
The headline act award was a tight run thing, but the judges finally unanimously agreed that Kean with figures of 5 for 20 would receive the BAFTA (Batting And Fielding Always Talking) award.
Here’s to another big performance next week...................
