Forfarshire Cricket Club 2nd XI v Meigle on Sun 20 Aug 2006 at 2pm

Match report
There was a steady flow of bodies arrived at Forthill for our friendly against Meigle, but 12.30 arrived and only seven, eight including AB, players had arrived. Contrary to the fixture list it was Meigle’s second XI that arrived and we were officially the second team. It was a mostly youthful looking side, AB turned up under the impression he was playing for Meigle. We think this was a cunning plan to get out of making some rolls. It was soon established that Jinglis was due to arrive and three names from the teamsheet were unavailable.
The opposition arrived and were two players better off than us but still one short. The covered wicket that should have been used the previous day was totally unplayable, fortunately a strip had been prepared further down the slope. The pitch was examined with utmost scrutiny and although a bit damp it was agreed we could get a game.
The weather looked as though it would stay fair for a while but Dick arrived with the news that rain was due at around 4 o’clock. A quick text was sent to Drummy who had dragged himself out of bed after the previous nights wedding and made haste to Forthill. Dick then made a few calls and young Fraser was drafted in as a late replacement. It was also confirmed that AB had been called in as replacement for the younger Tilston brother and it was in fact a cunning plan to get out of making rolls.
With our new eleven confirmed we had a bat first with Nelly and LJ opening the innings. The pitch was certainly a bit sticky and slow but that didn’t stop LJ playing a shot at the very first ball and was almost caught at gully. That was the only real scare in the first few overs as the two took the score along at a steady rate. Nelly was first to fall, out caught trying to force a shot over the top. Sam joined LJ who was now starting to find a few gaps and hit some nice fours.
LJ completed his fourth fifty of the season and tried to pick up the scoring rate. Sam was playing himself in and wasn’t looking in any trouble when LJ was out caught. AB came in with the intention of enjoying himself, after having a look at a few balls early on he immediately started to play some positive shots. Several good strikes cleared the ropes for six and as he grew in confidence there was no holding back. Favouring the mid-wicket region, he cleared the fence into the school a couple of times and hit the ball very cleanly. When he was finally out, not surprisingly caught on the boundary, his 70 runs had come in just 25 balls and he was smiling from ear to ear when he arrived back in the pavilion.
After a debate as to whom should be next in Steeley gave me the nod as Simon didn’t have time to get his spikes on. Sam and I enjoyed playing positively for the last 7 overs and took the score along to a healthy total.
We took to the field after tea with some optimism that the weather would be kind. Fraser and Simon opened the bowling both finding a bit of movement that made life difficult for the batsmen. Fraser was particularly tidy with his line and length and picked up a deserved wicket. Simon also picked up a wicket to a good catch at point by Sam. He could have had another couple of wickets had AB not still been thinking about the chocolate crispy cake that he missed out on at tea and dropped one easy chance and one not so easy.
Sadly the skies had darkened and the rain started to fall. We didn’t bother pushing on the covers at this point and it wasn’t long before the ground was too wet for play to continue.
