Match report

At Forthill on Sunday, when someone was overheard saying; “five family couples plus someone Welsh”………….you could have been forgiven for thinking that Ryan Giggs was on holiday in the Dundee area last weekend. However the reference was not about the (alleged) Manchester United lothario; but merely a comment on the very unusual Forthill XI line up for the visit of Arbroath United XI. The home team lined up with no less than five family combinations and the eleventh member of the side was Chris Welsh (a good excuse therefore to make a topical joke about Mr. Giggs)

The brothers Hill were in their usual place along with four father and son pairings which is surely a record of some sort? For the record books the dad and boy duos were namely the Sim’s, Carnegie’s, Robertson’s and McConnachie’s.
It was a season’s league debut for Robertson Senior and a career senior debut for Robertson Junior. If that makes any sense at all? It was good to see Bryce donning the whites again and he gave an instant reminder of what he can bring to the dressing room……….which lead to the dressing room emptying, the door being propped open for the rest of the day, and Bryce being booked into Ninewells for a check on his inner workings.

So a family affair on a chilly day and Sim senior won the toss and invited the visitors to take first knock on a Forthill track being used for the fourteenth time this season. The Hill brothers opened the bowling in combination and both proceeded to bowl their most accurate spells of the season and the young visiting line up found it difficult to score freely against them. Wickets fell early and limited scoring opportunities saw Arbroath finding it difficult to move the scoreboard along.

Chris and Craig then came on and Craig picked up a couple of wickets. One of these wickets was a truly magnificent diving catch at cover and was the second game running that Craig’s ageing father has taken a truly magnificent catch off Craig’s bowling. It was noted by other team members that it is indeed remarkable that a normally truly ordinary fielder can suddenly produce such moments of magic only when his own son is bowling.

His other wicket saw him take the prize scalp of visiting pro Bridges when he was adjudged LBW by Sidney Bowden. Chris bowled a very tidy 9 over spell of slow left arm bowling and Adam came back and cleaned up the tail in style to finish with magnificent figures of 5 for 13. So the innings folded on 101 and the players retreated for a welcome cup of tea on a very chilly day.

There was controversy ahead of tea - following the club order earlier in the week that players were no longer permitted to supply pizzas as part of the tea offer. A little slice of pizza is always a nice touch and is especially welcome on a cold day. Further enquiries revealed that the reason for the ban was a refusal from Freda to cook the pizza unless she gets a pay rise. The players had an emergency meeting and decided not to pay more money and instead use this as an excuse to enjoy healthier cold platter options.

The McConnachie offer was a nice filled roll selection, the Carnegie pair brought a platter of sandwiches, the Hills had a nice plate of cold savouries, the Sims brought a large array of left over kebabs and curries and the Robertson’s brought some Spanish cucumber and German bean sprouts. The Robertson offer got a wide berth from everyone – but it did explain the stench that was coming from Bryce earlier in the day. Welsh had a good plateful and lots of little bits on the side. Tea mark – 5 out of 10.

Sim junior and Carnegie Junior opened the batting in pursuit of the 102 runs needed for victory and Glenn unfortunately went quickly and was followed soon after by Adam. This brought Christian to the crease on debut and he played with great skill and belied his age with a very good display against some useful bowling. Two classy shots through the off side for four were especially memorable and it was a very good debut display from Christian. He unfortunately fell to a really good yorker but it was a great innings.

Steven (36 not out) played well and saw the side home to secure a good seven wicket win and overall this was a fine display set up by some very good bowling.
The early finish gave us time to retire to the bar where the skipper revealed he has a secret hobby which is very unusual. It would appear that when he is hungry, rather than having a sandwich he will simply gobble down one of his police issue walkie talkies. He has been undergoing tests to see if the eating of a radio will have any impact on him but so far he has a clean bill of health – although it does explain why earlier in the day when we asked him why he appealed he replied in a crackly voice; “ I was looking for a Limo Bravo Whiskey”

Man of the Match Award went to Adam for his magnificent figures of 5 for 13 and he wins a year’s supply of Pizza from the various Sainsbury’s bags lying in the corner of the changing room.

All players are reminded that the club shop is once again open for business from the back of a blue Volkswagen polo which is frequently seen in the car park being driven by a grumpy chap in a navy cricket Scotland sweatshirt. Following Bryce’s return to the fold a new item has been added to the list of products with an embossed Forfarshire CC Gas Mask now available. Put me down for one….
