Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Broomhall on Sun 28 Aug 2011 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 28 runs

Match report Forthill XI had a final home match of the season in a first ever encounter with Broomhall. A quick Google search showed that our visitors play in the East league 3 and are based close to Rosyth.
Both sides put out young teams with Forthill boasting no less than three of this year’s under 13 side. The average age was lifted by the appearances of Clark and Ted.
With skipper Sim being struck down by a mystery wrist injury (all jokes avoided due to this being a family read column) Clark was asked to take on the tossing duties and was pleased to bat first. In the tradition of coming clean – he admitted that no toss had actually taken place with Broomhall’s skipper sportingly inviting the home team to bat first.
Andy C opened with young Jack H and after Jack fell to a leading edge young Calum W came in and played well. In spite of taking a rap to the helmet he stood up to some fiery bowling and was unlucky to depart when looking set.
Andy was bowled and when Clark fell soon after the innings looked in trouble, however Ross joined Adam and they put on a match winning partnership. After a shaky start Ross played some fine shots on his way to a season’s best senior score of 39 - but it was Adam who was the star of the show.
From the off he played his shots and some brutal hitting was displayed, including a lusty blow over mid wicket which almost struck the chairman of selectors car. The chairman of selectors was umpiring at the time and publicly reprimanded the player. A quick 50 was reached and then his previous career best was passed and three figures were in sight. He continued to flay the bowling to all parts of the ground and reached his first ever century in great style. This was an innings of power hitting. Adam’s undoubted striking ability has now been mixed with greatly improved shot selection and this was great reward for his hard work throughout the season.
Adam sportingly retired (because the chairman told him to) and this left the tailenders to further boost the score, highlighted by a fine cover drive from young Blair W.
The innings closed on 215 for 9 and credit went to the young Broomhall attack who stuck to the task well. This was even more noteworthy given that Hurricane Irene decided to take the afternoon off in America and pay a visit to Forthill. The wind lashed the ground all afternoon and in bitterly cold conditions fielding was not easy. This leads to further conjecture that winter cricket would perhaps work in Scotland…!!!!
An average tea was taken and proved no threat to the season’s best offer of a few weeks back. Freda said she put out the hot sausage rolls but they must have gone into the Ballroom Triangle because they had mysteriously disappeared. Never was a hot cup of tea so welcome for the Broomhall fielders who compared frostbite injuries at tea.
The second half commenced with the Forthill side taking to the field wearing assorted jumpers, long johns and duffle coats to stave off the chill.
Samir opened and bowled and accurate spell before tweaking a hamstring and going off. The old new ball was shared by Blair W who became the first bowler called Walker to turn the ball in senior cricket in Forthill’s history. He bowled a good spell of leg spin bowling and turned the ball quite a distance. Reserve umpire Sidney Bowden was harsh on the young lad when calling a couple of wides due to the ball turning too much. Sidney always has to be in the game it would appear…
The bowling duties were shared around in typical friendly fashion and everyone bowled well. Broomhall were also going well in pursuit of the total and a good game was taking place. The match was in the balance when the young pairing of Calum W and Jack H were asked to bowl in tandem. Calum kept things tight at one end and Jack produced a brilliant spell of accurate seam bowling at the other end to run through the Broomhall batting and finish with figures of 4 for 14 from 5 great overs.
This turned the game Forthill’s way and the innings subsided to 176 all out.
The game was however much closer than the score suggested and under the trying conditions a very sporting game of cricket was played and almost 400 runs scored in 80 overs so it was a great effort by all.
Broomhall are clearly a club on the up and with some very good juniors in their ranks the future looks bright for them. For Forthill XI – this was further recognition that there are more good juniors in the pipeline and with the likes of Jack H, Calum W and Blair W doing well in this game – and all having been under 13 this year - and with the previous introduction of other under 13’s in Calum G and Christian R into senior cricket this season then this can only be good news.
The game marked the first ever senior appearance of Ted and the twins in the same line up which was one for the photo album. The young lads are displaying growing maturity on the cricket field and have shown huge improvement over the course of this year. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for their Father.
So the curtain comes down on another season of cricket on the hallowed turf of Forthill. The weather has been horrendous, the pitches softer than usual and the teas OK.
The first team had a good league season and only just got pipped for the title and with a young team hopefully the experience will stand them in good stead and they can go on to even better things in the coming years. The second team went through the season unbeaten and go back up to the Premier League of the SPCU and congratulations go to Dennis and the guys for a great effort. In that team there were some stellar performances from the younger lads and they will I am sure be looking to push into the first team next year.
The third team has a friendly and a solitary league game to play. Still in with a chance of promotion, this young side has also done well and most importantly we have seen significant improvement in all of the juniors which is terrific given the challenging weather conditions all year.
So we can only hope that the weather lets us finish off the season by actually playing a couple of games. In his night time job as STV weatherman, Sid (aka Sean Batty) assures us that there may be a wee shower over the weekend but it should generally be nae bad. Let’s hope he is right.
