Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v Falkland on Sun 09 Jul 2006 at 1pm

Match report
Expectations were high with our tremendous recent form and a few regular first team players missing for Falkland. It looked like it would be a good day and the weather would hold off. Drummy defied the odds and won four in a row and we stuck to the winning formula of batting first. It was a warm and slightly humid day so they’re might have been a bit of help for the bowlers. This didn’t pose much problem for Rhino and Howie as they both batted well and saw off the opening burst from the Saltires’ Overseas player Ian Moran, with a little luck for Rhino as he was dropped at first slip.
Rhino lifted the pace and hit Hamilton Jnr back over his head for four and six on a few occasions. Meanwhile, Howie continued to bat sensibly and accumulate runs.
After Rhino passed his fifty there was a change of bowling and when he tried to hit Watson’s first ball into the school he found a leading edge and looped a catch to gully. Still, another opening partnership of over fifty in good time was the perfect start. Cam was disappointed to depart early LBW, he didn’t have any complaints but did just about kick a glove onto the roof of the pivy in frustration.
Bobby C took over the mantle of aggressor and hit some good boundaries as he and Howie put on over a hundred for the third wicket. This was an important partnership to put together and Bobby eventually fell one short of another deserved fifty. We’re all holding our breath for Robert to kick on and score his maiden century for the first team, and we might not have to wait long if he keeps up this good form.
Pete came in and was timing the ball beautifully from the first. He and Howie moved the score along quickly until Howie was denied another century when he too looped a catch to the gully region. Umi came in and took charge, hitting some quality shots both sides of the wicket. He and Drummy hustled well between the wickets and turned ones into twos. Pete’s fifty took only 39 balls and was just what was needed at that stage.
Beast came in and hit a few quick ones and Umi completed an excellent fifty off just 34 balls. Umi’s knock was the highlight for me because given the stage of the game that he went in, there wasn’t any slogging. He just played excellent attacking shots and timed the ball really well.
When we came out after tea there was an ominous dark cloud lurking to the West. The opposition had to get off to a good start and their two Australians opened up the innings and let loose. We didn’t bowl well and only Rhino was able to stem the run flow to any extent. A dropped catch in the first over and again in the seventh as well as two run out chances could have made all the difference.
The weather closed in slowly and around the twelfth over the drizzle began. As the covers came on it gradually got heavier but I don’t think anyone expected the monsoon conditions that were witnessed. When the rain finally stopped the square was flooded in a number of areas and the old covers weren’t up to the torrential rain. The overspill of water had run onto the wicket and there wasn’t any chance of completing the game.
The crazy rules of the competition mean that only 10 overs of the second innings have to be bowled for it to be considered a game. It seems more than a little unfair that one team should only have to do a fifth of the work that the other did. It also benefits the team batting second if there is a chance of rain, especially given the fact that they only use run rate to determine the winner. Not that it made any difference to us in this game but it’s ridiculious that they don’t use the Duckworth/Lewis method to calculate the winner.
I can’t think of any other sport that would decide the result of a game with this kind of imbalance. However, we’re out, they’re through, end of.
