Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Strathearn on Sun 06 May 2007 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 89 runs
Match report
Following last week’s opening season defeat, it was a much changed Forthill XI that welcomed last years league runners up Strathearn to Broughty Ferry. A disappointing crowd saw under pressure stand in skipper Clark lose the toss for the second week running and again Forthill were inserted on a pitch which was slightly damp in spite of being covered by sticky backed plastic overnight.
The continued absence of skipper Simmy was the cause of much conjecture among home fans. The official reason given for his absence of having to attend an important family function was under some doubt given that his son and nephew were both in the home eleven. Rumours persist of an alleged drinking problem and club officials were quick to refute suggestions that he was once again ensconced in a clinic in Fife. When asked about the rumours, his son Steven said , “all I can say is that he phoned me at 3 o’ clock this morning and asked me if I knew how to work a pedalo.”
John and Aman opened up for Forthill and John was unfortunate to get a “jaffa” and was bowled early doors. This let Ian in at his new spot of number three and he proceeded to play what was unarguably his best ever innings for the club. He drove, cut, pulled and swept the visiting attack to all parts of the ground and the score quickly mounted to the stage where Ian took his score to 99. It was unfortunate that at that stage he chose to take a nervous single and run out young Aman who had played very nicely for his 45 runs.
However, nothing could detract from the day and Ian went on to complete a fantastic century. When Ian departed it left Clark and Andy to pick up the pieces and on a drying wicket they played a few shots. Clark managed to connect with a few and also completed an unlikely century in the last over. All in all – at 313 for 3 at tea it seemed a good toss to lose.
After a feed comprising mainly of chipolatas, sausage rolls and Mars Bar cakes it was into the field and Mo and Shabaz opened up. They bowled well and Strathearn were quickly behind the clock and a few early wickets saw the game in the bag. All credit to the Strathearn middle order who fought back well and gave the score some respectability, however at the end of the day it was a comfortable home win. All of the bowlers chipped in and it was good to see Andy and Steven having a first bowl of the season. Young Sam turned his arm over at the end and if he keeps bowling like that he will undoubtedly play more games for the third team before the season is out.
So a very satisfying day saw the Forthill XI win their first ever game at this level and the Man of The Match Award went to Ian for his excellent hundred and his prize of a day’s motor racing tuition at Knockhill will come in handy for the away games.
Special thanks to go to scorer Peter who in spite of the gloomy conditions was able to see his book OK thanks to the new Art Deco lighting he has had installed in his scorebox courtesy of personal sponsors Walker Interiors. The local press were in attendance at the game and are likely to feature Peter’s latest cricketing exploits in the coming weeks.
So next week it is away to Kinloch in the first of our local derbies of the year. It is hoped that Simmy will be back in action to lead the troops assuming he has found his way back to dry land on the pedalo. Given the game is being played in St Andrews it is hoped that the multiple distractions of golf, water sports, curry houses and public houses will not take his mind off the cricket.
Dave will be running a supporters bus as usual with pick up points at Freda’s house, Walker Interiors, The Art Deco light depot and Tay Ferries.
