Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v Watsonians on Sat 16 Jun 2007 at 1pm

Match report
The forecast was poor but the expected overnight rain hadn’t come to much so the wicket and the square were fine. The annoying light drizzle persisted most of the morning but there was always hope that we would get started. The delayed start left plenty of time for the health conscious among the team to depart to a certain fried chicken outlet for some sustenance. There were also a few obligatory games of Test Match in the changees, AB scoring a PB of 89 not out.
Meanwhile somewhere on the A1 Chic was still on his return journey from doon sooth. He was in constant touch with the Met office about the weather at Forthill, which allowed him to time his arrival just before the start of play. We eventually got a 33 overs a side game started at 3.30 in the damp and freezing conditions. We had a bowl first and Sammy T picked up a couple of early wickets, we then got the important one of pro Crosthwaite. With the score on 31 for 3 there was much rejoicing among the home fans that had braved the cold. However, a patient partnership lead by the other Drummond helped Watsonians recover.
Umi was bowling well and finding some good turn but couldn’t get the breakthrough, AB didn’t quite find his consistency and Watty came on to replace him. Watty eventually found some success with the short pitched approach, after a bonged catch at fine leg, when Drummy caught their keeper. AB then replaced Umi at the other end but still wasn’t finding his areas, the pressure that had been created early on had been relieved as they put on another decent partnership.
Howie was given responsibility to bowl the last few overs and replaced Watty. He was able to keep them quiet and picked up a deserved wicket. Umi came back on and had some trouble with the wet ball and struggled to find his rhythm, but wasn’t helped by a dropped catch at deep mid-wicket. Gordon Drummond completed a good fifty and the momentum we let them achieve in the last few overs gave them a bigger score than they probably should have.
The teas were well above standard for Forthill and a much needed cup of tea was enjoyed. A small number of spectators had snuck into the tea room when they heard that there were some of AB’s cheese slice pieces left. There’s possibly a fund raising opportunity for Tedders to sell some of the left overs to these freeloaders.
Our innings got off to a decent start with the Watty and Howie opening partnership reunited. Unfortunately it was short lived as Howie missed a Yorker and was cleaned up and Watty then hit a straightforward catch to mid-wicket. We’re not sure how much Umi was paid by Gordy to run Pete out but the new gold watch he was wearing raised a few eyebrows. The hush round the ground after the suicidal run out was broken by Pete’s helmet bouncing round the changing rooms.
Umi knew what he had to do and with Tony set about winning the game. The pair played well and Umi had reached 28 before holing out in the deep. This prompted the beginning of the end as wickets tumbled regularly. The scoring rate had hovered around 6 for much of the innings but it now started to creep up. This spelled the end of any hopes of victory as the last wicket pair tried to eek out a few more runs for an extra point. Verdict: Poor
