Forfarshire Cricket Club Veterans v Arbroath Veterans on Fri 13 Jun 2014 at 6.00pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 20 runs
Match report
The evening of Friday 13th June saw Forfarshire Veterans take on Arbroath Veterans at Forthill as part of the Dundee Beer Festival weekend.
Rain during the day put the game in some doubt, however some afternoon ground clearing work and great assistance from Cully saw the match given the go ahead.
Arbroath elected to bat first on a tricky looking wicket and Murray Clark and Jeff Petrie did well against the opening home attack of Bryce Robertson (off a shorter run up these days) and Tony Weed. Unfortunately after just five overs, the heavens opened and the players scurried for the cover of the beer tent, however thankfully this proved to be the one interruption of the evening and play resumed after a lengthy break.
The home skipper rang the changes in the bowling line up but it was the visitors who remained in charge throughout and some fine hitting from Kevin Robb in particular lead Arbroath to a fine total of 131 when their innings closed.
Top bowling performance for the home side was from Nobby Crooks who bowled four fine overs of leg spin, his only hiccup coming when he slipped on his ample bottom when running in to bowl on the slippy run up – much to the delight of the beer tent. Special mention goes to Alex Steele who at the age of 73 kept wicket immaculately as ever for the home team – and had beautifully pressed large white underpants on.
Visiting skipper Neil “Burno” Burnett stuck his head around the home dressing room door at half time and pronounced that his team would be using a pink ball for the second half. Not wanting to seem unsporting, the home team agreed to his declaration but wondered what Burno was up to..... Inspection of the ball at the end of the match showed it had been provided by the Kinder Company and explained why the home batsmen had so much difficulty in hitting the ball. At least, that was our now ready made excuse. The home batters all had trouble against the visiting bowlers – and tight spells were in evidence, especially from Wayne Sullivan of Falkland CC who was somehow included in the visiting ranks. When asked how he qualified to play for Arbroath, Wayne said that when Burno invited him to play he asked if he had ever been to Arbroath for a fish supper. When he said he had, Burno said “that is good enough for me”.......
The biggest shock in the visiting bowling department came in the shape of David “Boycott” Bridges who came on and bowled floating pies with the pink egg that seemed on the face of it very easy to swipe over the short, leg side boundary. However swish after swish from the homesters failed to connect and a series of bemused batsmen came and went – shaking their heads at how they were unable to swat the pink pies for six. The best efforts of Tony managed to keep Forfarshire in the game but the innings folded with the total on 110 for 6 and a comfortable 21 run victory was secured for Arbroath.
Handshakes all round came at the end and a few pints of real ale were consumed as tales of the “good old days” were recounted. It was generally agreed that the evening had been a success and talk of it becoming an annual event were discussed. Thanks go to Burno for arranging the Arbroath ten, to Wayne Sullivan for buying a fish supper back in the 80’s, to Kinder for sponsoring the ball used by Arbroath and to Cully for his sterling efforts in preparing a pitch in a very difficult week weather wise.
The game of cricket and the cementing of the ongoing friendship between the clubs were the real winners on the night......and the bar of course!
