Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 8 runs
Match report
Monday 4th August 2104 saw the latest in what has become an excellent annual fixture between the Forfarshire Young Boys and the Scottish Forty Club at Forthill.
The Forty Club members are all over 39 years of age as the name suggests - and they play a series of fixtures which are mainly against schools and young club sides with the aims of promoting the game of cricket and putting something back into the sport. At the ripe young age of 73, Forfarshire legend Alex Steele is the organiser in chief of this fixture and he also captained the Forty Club side which included home grown youngsters Gordon Walker and Clark McConnachie. There was also a well known face in the shape of returning Forfarshire player Kevin Ferrie who represented the club in the 80’s. It was also good to see Jim Inglis back on Forthill soil for the first time in a while. Some people even asked him to autograph their bats.
With a couple of late call offs, further spice was added to the encounter when Forfarshire overseas pro Aaron Lilly was called up as a guest for the Forty Club; and Forfarshire overseas amateur Liam Gough captained the Forfarshire Young Boys. There is nothing like a bit of Aussie rivalry. Alex won the toss and elected to bat and a steady start ensued until Paul Coffey was bowled by Craig. This brought the solid figure of Bob Angus to the crease along with his mammoth three pound two ounce bat. He wielded it to good effect and played some lusty blows to all parts as the scoring rate shot up dramatically. Once he fell, normal service was resumed as Kevin joined Dave Davies and a more sedate pace was enjoyed. After Dave was run out by a Liam howitzer, Clark joined Kevin and they kept the score ticking along until Kevin was dismissed. He was replaced by former Forfarshire player and now DHSFP pro Graham Black who was beaten all ends up by a Cooky outswinger. This brought Aaron to the crease and he and Clark managed to take the score along nicely before Clark retired tired; and was replaced in the latter overs by Sandy Baird who is an ever present and popular figure in this fixture. The innings closed on 213 and a fine tea was taken in the ballroom area. The good manners of the young lads in voluntarily allowing their older opponents to have first dibs on the tea were well noted. Thanks to all for providing an excellent spread.
Craig and Christian both fell early in the reply and this brought Liam and Cameron together. Both played nicely and the score ticked along well. Cameron survived a good spell from his Dad which he particularly enjoyed. With the scoreboard looking in good shape for the Young Boys, Liam sportingly retired to allow the other young lads to try and finish off the run chase. In spite of their best efforts this was just beyond them and three wickets at the death for Kevin were a highlight, in what he felt was the first time he had ever bowled at Forthill. The wait was worth it!
The game ended in an eight run win for the Forty Club, however the result was immaterial as it was a fine game of cricket played in an excellent spirit throughout which was the most important thing.
Hopefully the young lads will have learned from the experience and will have noted that it is not always necessary to play big shots to rack up a good score, that line and length are the key elements of bowling and that they also enjoyed a master class in wicket keeping from the best in the business in Mr Steele. Hopefully they also noted all of the examples of how not to field which were especially put on for them throughout the innings by the Forty Club.
Thanks go to Alex for organising the fixture, to Forfarshire for allowing the use of the ground, to those that provided the tea and to all participants.
Here’s to next year’s game!
