Rossie Priory v Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 27 May 2017 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 5 wickets
Match report
Saturday 28th May marked the day that Forfarshire 3rd XI (previously known as Forthill 2nd XI) began their 2017 SPCU Division 1 League campaign with a short trip up the Perth dual carriageway to Inchture to take on the Rossie Priory Rockets.
Arrival at the ground saw local groundsman Rab McFarland sat astride his beloved tractor and he was happily giving his outfield one final mow ahead of the game. Clark lost the toss and Forfarshire were invited to take first use of the wicket. James G and Cammy opened up and against some decent bowling runs were not easy to find. Both openers fell quickly and Glenn and Clark tried to rebuild with stout defence and an occasional flashing blade. Home veteran player Bobby McFarlane was chirping from his spot at short fine leg in an attempt to disrupt the batsmen.
Glenn was bowled off his pads and Morgan came in and this saw the only decent partnership of the innings. With Forfarshire in apparent control Clark (48) pulled a short ball into the welcome hands of Lynch who happily pouched the catch. From there on in a regular clatter of wickets fell and the innings closed ahead of the scheduled 45 over mark with the visitors all out for 156. A heavy rain shower interspersed the innings; but we turned on Radio Tay and local weather lady Roberta McFarland gave hope by saying that it should stay dry long enough to get the game finished.
The tea interval. The Rockets have served up some mixed teas in the past; and had previously had a dreadful mark from the Forfarshire tea adjudicator, so local head chef Roberto Del MacFarlano was keen to provide some top fare. This was a first tilt at the Golden Urn 2017 and a fine spread was offered up. A fine array of sandwiches with an excellent variety of fillings, some fine sausage rolls, a plentiful and interesting mixture of cakes and some sizeable berries (raspberry and strawberry) were a great finishing touch. A nice brew of tea served in a mug rounded things off nicely. The only real downside came in the form of an intimidating local club president (Robert McFarland) who spent the whole tea time staring angrily at the visiting tea adjudicator - and was clearly still reeling from previous bad comments regarding the Rossie Rockets hospitality.
This was a fine tea and was awarded an excellent 87 out of 100 and sets a high early benchmark for the 2017 Golden Urn. The standard was even commended by Cricket Scotland official and perennial free lunch attendee Bob McFarlane who appeared from nowhere to fill his boots with nosh.
The second half commenced under grey skies and Iain and Glenn opened up. Both bowled well and the homesters lost wickets and fell behind the clock. Ted and Blair came on and both bowled well, but some attacking batting paid off for the home team - and with very little luck the visitors could only shake their heads as the scoreboard rattled along. Finally a wicket fell; but under laden skies and then persistent rain the home team edged towards the winning line. James S came on and bowled well and Rupert (on debut) also tried manfully but with the ball now very slippery; the home team deservedly edged over the line. They didn’t even need to call upon home batting star Rob-Mick Farland.
So the Rockets collected full points……..and the visitors dodged the watching sheep and collected their belongings from the changing rooms. Thankfully we managed to avoid local village idiot Boab Madman who was lurking in the trees.
So, a disappointing start to the 2017 campaign for the Forfarshire 3rd XI. Next up is a visit from St Andrews Beachcombers at Mackays Forthill next Sunday. All players are reminded that Forfarshire 3rd XI are the current holders of the Golden Urn and an early response to the Rockets 87 out of 100 is anticipated……….if the cricket is rubbish; we should always have a nice tea to look forward to!
