Freuchie XI v Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sun 06 Aug 2017 at 1pm
Match was Abandoned

Match report A trip to Freuchie to play the home team's second eleven was the task in hand for Forfarshire 3rd XI on Sunday 6th August 2017.

Heavy rain all week had seen the wholesale cancellation of numerous cricket games - so it was perhaps with some surprise that this fixture in deepest Fife received the green light from the rain gods. The players set off in possession of a nice cake parcel courtesy of our young off spinner's Mum - and it is hoped that in future more players will buy into this new concept called "Car Cakes". The "Car Cakes" idea is basically a way to provide players with some nutrition en route to games; and more importantly some nosh for the road home. This will take the form of some cakes........which will be eaten in the car. Hence the innovative and catchy "Car Cakes" name.

The skipper was the lucky first recipient of a "car cakes" food parcel and heading towards the Tay Bridge the cakes were cracked open and very nice they were too. They were dispensed among the players and they all tucked in heartily, that is except for one unnamed player who was not feeling too peckish due to an overdose of blackcurrant cider the night before. The cakes were of the chocolate tiffin variety which are so well liked by the club's members, and the nice blue trimmed Tupperware box was heavily laden with the goodies.

Freuchie was reached - but heavy skies and rain were not really what we wanted to see. After a while the rain relented and the covers were pushed back to reveal a nice looking track. The rain relented enough for the toss to be lost and we were put out to field. Iain and Glenn opened up and bowled quite well.........but then the rain came and off we trooped to the sanctuary of the dressing room. There then followed some heavy duty banter among the young lads and an interesting array of topics were discussed. Young James took us through his football betting concept which was very enlightening; and he promised to split his winnings with whole team should his 18 correct scores come up this week.... He anticipates winning in excess of £500,000 before the football season ends so good news for everyone really.

The rain went off......and Jack and James S were introduced to the attack.........but the rain came on again......and off we trooped again.

It was decided that tea would be taken and we were pointed towards the Freuchie function suite where a large, centrally placed food table was in view. There was more than ample seating all around and the chairs were of the velvet covered variety so nice and comfy. What a fine array of fodder there was. Sandwiches, rolls, pizza, sausage rolls, mini sausages......home made and pre-packed cakes....and plenty of them. A nice supply of orange juice and tea in an old fashioned silver pot. And all served up by a lady! As the Golden Urn competition for 2017 reaches closure...........this looked like a tea that could challenge current leaders Forfarshire for the title. The adjudicator was clearly impressed and informed the lads that he was struggling to find fault with this splendid offering. He was contemplating his mark and whether a first ever full marks could even be awarded, when he walked over to get a refill for his cup of tea when shock,horror...........there was no tea left in the teapot. It was a great surprise that such a stellar tea would fall down on such a simple basic as a lack of the hot, brown stuff...... Such a shame.

After some thought the mark was announced and a score of 91 out of 100 was awarded. This puts Freuchie in second place for the Golden Urn 2017 and means that Forfarshire only just hold on to top spot..............by just one point.

With tea taken, a look outside revealed dark skies and the rain still falling so it was decided that the game was over.

The players went their separate ways. In spite of just having tucked into a fine feed the skipper still cracked open the "Car Cakes" on the way home and everyone - even the cider filled youngster - had a piece of tiffin to ease the journey back home to Dundee.

Next week sees another away trip to Fife - this time to St Andrews to face the table topping home team. Car Cakes should be brought by all players.
