Stirling County v Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 17 May 2008 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 105 runs

Match report It was a chilly and overcast day for our trip to New Williamfield. There was only a small gathering at Forthill because so many cars were coming from different directions. The rain held off in the morning and the sun even appeared for a while in the afternoon. This was our first visit to the new facilities in Stirling and everyone was suitably impressed. We lost the toss and were asked to make first use of what looked a good pitch, if a little green in places.

Rhino and Howie opened up with a fine stand of 48, Rhino making 30 of those before he was caught in the gully by the opposition pro. It was a typically attacking knock that featured a towering six back over the bowlers head. Boundaries were hard to come by as the outfield was a bit slow. Coops and Howie then put on a good partnership of around 80. Both settling in well and punishing any bad balls. The wicket seemed to be to Tom’s liking and his innings of 39 included a few classy shots, most notably a six that soared over the mid-wicket boundary and a quite magnificent cut shot that raced away for 4.

Tom’s departure saw Stirling exert a bit of pressure and Howie was finding it increasingly difficult. The scoreboard hadn’t moved on much when he was out bowled. AB and Chik staged a bit of a recovery but AB couldn’t manage more than 21. Umair started brightly and showed his astonishing pace between the wickets to really put the pressure on the fielders. Chik was starting to tire of Umair’s sprinting and started to play a few shots but ended up being caught. Tony’s stay was brief as he too was caught but Drummy was on hand to steady things and saw us through to a good total.

It was good to see that the teas were up to the same standard as the rest of the facilities and enjoyed by all. We started quite well in the field with the bowlers enjoying a bit more pace and bounce than the Forthill wicket. After an early breakthrough Stirling recovered a bit with a dropped catch at first slip letting them off the hook. They were never up with the run rate and the pressure was on the batsmen. An excellent bit of fielding by Umair saw Taylor run out and was the turning point of the innings.

Richie was making a return to the team after missing most of last season, he and Umair combining well to pick up some vital wickets. 89 for 2 soon became 101 for 6 with some good fielding to back up the bowlers and keep the required rate going up. With all the main batsmen gone it was a matter of finishing things off and Richie returned to the attack to pick up the last two wickets.

A good win on a good wicket for cricket. We will all look forward to a return trip to New Williamfield with the prospect of an even better wicket next year.
