Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v St.Modans on Sun 08 Jul 2018 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 185 runs
Match report
Just two weeks after a long journey down to Bannockburn to play St Modans, it was the same opposition at Forthill this time out for the Forfarshire 3rd XI. After last week’s thrashing by Kinloch it was decided that something called a warm up should be introduced to third team cricket. This was something which most of the side were not accustomed to, but most got on with one anyway. That was until all four Walkers arrived at the same time and decided that instead of taking part in the warm up, now being run by a hadn’t-been-home-yet Hogarth, their time would be better spent watching everyone else take catches. a much greater surprise came though when St Modans won the toss and chose to field…on a boiling hot day at Forthill.
Opening the batting were Lewis Robinson and Callum Walker, the Englishmen put on a good opening stand before Callum was out, bowled for 26. With Craig now off the injury list he came in at 3 and played some nice shots before spooning one to cover on 36.4 This was the start of a miniature collapse for the Forfs, with Craig, Clark and Joseph all going quickly one after the other. Cameron came to the crease at 6 though and alongside Lewis who had just gone past 50, steadied the innings. Cameron started to hit some boundaries and with Lewis creeping ever closer to three figures at the other end his team mates were for once, praying for singles to keep Lew Rob on strike. With just 5 overs left Lewis required 10 runs for his maiden century but scoring was starting to slow, and Cameron didn’t seem to understand the situation, running ones at the end of overs and keeping the strike for himself. However, with three balls to spare the moment came, a good old-fashioned slog over mid-wicket for four took Lewis to 102 and brought up his first ever ton. This quite brilliant innings, of 104 unbeaten, brought the Forfs to a close on 264/4 with Cameron finishing not out on 39.
Chef Dave was once again in charge of tea making but with work being done to the clubhouse at Forthill the usual tea room was out of use and so a half done up function room was used to host the most important part of the day. A great array of sandwiches, cakes and pizzas were once again put on. However, the first complaint of the season comes from none other than Craig. His time on the side-lines had given him much time to enter a loving relationship with sausage rolls and with none on offer at teas alongside not taking much of a fancy to the millionaire shortbread, a rather hungry Craig started the second innings.
With Sainsbury’s obviously shut for the day, Kailas opened the bowling alongside Liam. The pair bowled line and length well and Kailas found a reward in the shape of the first wicket. With Liam quickly taking the second after Ted’s best circus act at gully, and Kailas picking up his second of the day, the hosts were well and truly on top early in the innings. After Kailas picked up his third wicket in the seventh over, the run in from third man seemed to have taken its toll on Liam as he thirstily asked when drinks were? This was met with resounding laughter from his team mates who clearly had not experienced the pain and suffering inflicted upon those who field on the boundary behind square on a regular occasion especially in heat of 20 plus degrees. With Kailas continuing to take all the wickets by himself, Liam’s role as workhorse had been resumed and the visitors were seven down by the end of the opening pair’s spell as Kailas finished with figures of 6/20 off 9 overs. Clark turned to spin to finish the job off and Blair could not buy a wicket it would seem.
With half chances here and there going down and batsman refusing to snick behind it was eventually a run out that broke the eighth wicket partnership. A run out described by Ted as “The worst piece of cricket I’ve ever seen”. This saw a rank full toss being half hit and dropping just short of a static Liam at mid-on which he then misfielded, one of the batsmen still fancied a run though and by the time his partner had sent him back Liam had eventually gathered the ball, thrown it about three feet wide of the wicket to Blair and a bail was somehow then taken off. The match was wrapped up by Blair and Joseph who finished with one each. With the visitors being bowled out for 79 it was another convincing victory for the Forfs over the Bannockburn side in just a fortnight.
After mucking about with some white sheets to cover next week’s wicket for a while after the match, the players gathered back in the dressing room. A dressing room soon filled with delight when Callum Walker offered up four mini sausage rolls. Craig couldn’t get off his seat quick enough, for someone so recently back from injury it was deemed a risk worth taking as he swooped like a vulture across the bench to land his prize. Gifts of chocolate rolls came afterwards as Callum had appeared to forget to hand in his donation for teas to Dave, something which he later denied.
The day was rounded off with levies being paid and coins being counted. Some inconsiderate people can’t find three-pound coins on a Sunday morning and so turn up with 10 and 20 pence pieces instead which meant the dressing room resembled a bank. The sheer laziness is shocking, this will most definitely need addressed. However even worse is when some people don’t turn up with the required funds and try and sneak away without paying the full whack!
