Forfarshire Cricket Club 4th XI v Arbroath United 2nd XI on Sun 10 Jun 2018 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost by 82 runs
Match report
The 10th of June 2018. Derby day. Two great sides who have battled it out many times over the years were going head to head once again. Forfarshire and Arbroath. By far the biggest game of cricket being played that day.
“NO CHICKEN DIPPERS” was the cry from chef Dave the day before, and so Liam had made some fresh ham rolls for teas that day. Dave may have regretted this decision however, when all 11 Forfs players turned up with rolls and/or sandwiches. An absolute feast of varieties of meats and fillings slapped between some bread would be had later in the day. However, the game.
Batting first, Arbroath openers Daniel and Fergus got off to a quick start off the bowling of Liam and Lewis, Daniel making one resident a very unhappy one by launching a six over the score box into their back garden, not to be retrieved. New old ball in hand, Liam and Lockhart set about tearing into the Arbroath batting line-up. Liam made the breakthrough, forcing Fergus to snick one behind to stand in keeper for the day James for 8. Daniel and Paul then set about scoring quick runs for the visitors before Lockhart got the wicket of Paul for a quick 28. This brought Burnett in. Captain for the day he’d managed to promote himself to 4, and unfortunately that was all he made thanks to great catch at short third man by Lewis for Liam’s second wicket of the afternoon. This wicket was greatly cheered for some reason by one injured Forfs supporter who had gone for a lie down on the long-off boundary. Liam’s third of the day followed with the next ball. Hat-trick on the cards? “OVER”. Maybe next over then…bowled out… Aalap, in-particular, was gutted at not having the chance to stand at silly point for the next delivery. Maybe next week?
Young Matty joined his older brother at the crease. He became Ollie’s victim not long after being caught behind by James for a very well-deserved wicket for the youngster. With Arbroath five down at drinks things were looking up for the hosts, however Daniel was still there and had by this point passed 50 despite being dropped on 2 if not 3 occasions. The remainder of the wickets were shared amongst the Forfs bowlers with Jonathan picking up 2 and the Whisson father/son partnership getting one each, Steve picking up that of Daniel for a very well-made 118 late in the innings. Arbroath finishing up 223/9 off 40 overs. Liam the pick of the bowlers finishing with 3/44 from his 8 overs.
Sandwich fest here we go. Dave had managed to cram all the sandwiches on one table which was quite an achievement along with the usual pizzas and sausage rolls. However, with James Sim away watching some event in Edinburgh there was a noticeable lack of cakes from Brechin’s finest bakery, this is something that will need to be investigated at the end of season fines night surely. When news reached of Johnny Bairstow’s quickfire hundred at the Grange sandwiches seemed a lot less appealing to the vast majority and thought we had better get on with our second innings to take our eyes off the score.
The Forfs opening batsman Lockhart and Jonathan probably should not have been surprised to see the sight of Burnett himself opening the bowling for the visitors. Jonathan was unfortunately out in the first over to an excellent delivery. Aalap and Lockhart looked to set about rebuilding from 1 for 1 and looked to be doing so as Aalap went on the attack before being bowled by Megan for 9. This brought James to the crease. His mates seemed to have so much confidence in him, both had their money on a duck, but James proved them wrong and played some nice cricket shots before going for 33. Promoted to number 5 Liam could not believe it and set about trying to prove the captain had made the right decision. For the first time this season he made it out of single figures with a couple of nice boundaries before being told the ball had hit the pads in line by the umpire on 11. Youngsters Oliver and Lewis set about doing their best to bring the struggling Forfs back into the game and with Lewis playing some fine shots until he was dismissed for 13 caught and bowled. Clark, Max and Steve tied up the batting for the hosts without adding much more on this occasion and unfortunately Forfarshire fell quite a bit short of the required total.
With our game over all attention turned to Edinburgh with England needing 7 off 8 deliveries for victory over the Scots. 8 maybe 9 huddled round the phone to watch it on Sky Go, just in time to see Sharif trap Mark Wood lbw and wrap up a famous win for Scotland, well in lads. Sheer and utter bedlam followed in the capital with a pitch invasion and all. Still, a day on, nobody is quite sure how one very keen, and clearly feeling the heat, Scotland fan has found himself in newspapers on the other side of the world, fair effort from the guy though, if only we knew his name.
A famous day for Scottish cricket and hopefully many more to come in the future, for in the past they must not remain, if only Forfarshire could have risen again on this particular day and sent Arbroath home, tae think again.
