Scorecard

Arbroath United v Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI on Wed 02 Jul 2008 at 6.30pm
Match was Tied Forfarshire on fewer wickets lost

Match report Forfarshire fielded a team depleted by international commitments, exams, holidays, injuries and family duties in the T20 game at Arbroath on Wednesday. The prize for the winners was a £600 winner takes all final against Stoneywood or Dunfermline, and the chance to reach the national finals in Glasgow on August 3.

Drummy put his weekend tossing problems behind him and chose to take first knock on a deck left uncovered the previous night and affected by heavy rain. The ball darted about early on and Parker got one through Bobby’s ‘defences’ in the first over to leave us one down.

Wally and Howie batted sensibly and put on 55 in the first 10 overs before Howie was bowled. Wally was out stumped as the slower bowlers came on and it became harder to score. Tony carried his bat for a well made 35 as we posted 110 for 7, maybe 15 to 20 short of what we would have liked.

Dougie took the new ball and carried on his weekend form snaring the dangerous McGill for a second ball duck. Constant rain was falling by now and seemed to make the wicket a bit easier as the seamers skidded on to the bat. Burnett and Parker were scoring well and we looked to be struggling.

LJ and Blackie were introduced and both bowled tight spells, with Blackie bowling Burnett and having Parker caught in the deep by LJ who made the catch look easy. The run rate started to creep up steadily as Howie and then Bobby (with his first bowl of the season) bowled a good line and length. We cut down boundaries and fielded well in the ring and it was clear this was going to be close.

Both bowlers then had lbw’s and 2 crazy run outs left 7 needed off the last over with 2 wickets standing. This became 3 off 3 balls when Bobby bowled the number 10 to leave their last pair needing 3 off 2 deliveries. A crazy single to mid off nearly resulted in a direct hit run out but they got through to leave Arbroath needing 2 off the last ball. Bobby bowled a good straight ball and it was hit down the ground to Chic at long off who returned it to the bowler to take the bails off. Run out with the scores tied, but Forfs win by virtue of losing less wickets (although this took a frantic 5 minutes to confirm).

The sound of silence from the normally noisy home support was deafening and this was a remarkable come back from the Forfs. Great bowling by the slower bowlers backed up by good fielding was the difference in the end.

We can now look forward to the final. Note to match secretary, can this be on a Sunday so we can get a day out!!
