Match report Forthill XI returned to the scene of their mid-week cup triumph to take on Strathearn on Saturday. Unavailability stretched the playing resources so it was a young team on show, with one debutant in Scott C.

Arriving at the ground in good time, the usual pre-match routine of inspecting the wicket revealed the overnight rain had left the playing surface soft but as we’d all been inspecting the wrong pitch at Doo’cot, and with Simmy losing the toss, it really didn’t matter what that pitch looked like.

Mo was promoted up the order to open the batting in his last match before heading off to Honduras for a year teaching English. Kev fell early, knicking a wide one to slip and Mo was run out to leave us 8 for 2 in the 3rd over. Finbar kept the score ticking along nicely and was the main stay of a partnership of 30 with Ian. Finbar eventually fell for a valuable 31 in tricky batting conditions. Elliot was joined by Dean, and they took the total up to near 100 before Dean was out for a well hit 25. Elliot was playing his fourth match of the week, and came into the game full of confidence and this showed in his well constructed 49 not out as he guided Forthill XI up to their final total of 148.

Tea offered a large variety of high quality sandwiches along with an abundance of cakes. Fresh strawberries and cream were a much appreciated touch, but after consultation with Forthill’s tea committee, a mandatory 4 points were deducted due to cold sausage rolls and the absence of plates and tea-ladies, so 6 out 10.

Mo and Kev got to open the bowling as well as the batting, and bowled well but after 4 overs apiece were replaced by Elliot and Dean in an attempt to find the first wicket. Dean took a couple of overs to find his line and length but then found good areas and returned figures of 4 for 44 with Simmy taking two good keeper catches along the way, before the winning runs were scored in the 30th over.
