Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Norwood on Sun 07 Sep 2008 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 7 wickets
Match report
With the normal third team reporter off to the Flower show it was decided that this report would be ghost written by Ted, Dick and Cully. The light rain in the morning meant the game could be in doubt. All the players arrived with varying degrees of enthusiasm and Cully got the wicket cut. The pitch looked pretty good but the outfield was quite wet, which gave it even more similarity to an Amazonian rainforest. Due to the cold temperatures Ian had dug out the Forfs beanie hat but was as keen as ever to get the game started.
You could sense the end of season in the air, but it might just have been the effects of last night’s kebab. Fortunately the sky was clearing from the North and after some debate it was decided the game would start, which was just as well after Cully going to all that bother. The weather had obviously put off the expected crowd of three figures. It wasn’t long before one of the figures was spotted in the bar though. The skipper jumped in his car to go and pick up Simmy junior, who hadn’t travelled because he wanted an extra half hour in bed.
It’s unclear who won the toss but the skipper informed the team that they were fielding first. Once the boards were positioned, the covers removed and the sight screen lifted back into a vertical position, the lads took to the field for the last time at Forthill this season. It’s not uncommon for there to be 3 or even 4 Graeme’s on the field at Forthill but today it was the turn of the 3 Andrew’s. The first over was bowled by the Wallace one, who had obviously sweet talked the skipper into giving him the wind at his back.
Aman took the new (reconditioned) ball at the other end and quickly realised that it was going to be hard work into the strong gale. So when his shoulder injury mysteriously reoccurred after only bowling 1 over, Quinno was called into the attack. Wally removed one of the openers with an edge behind to get us off to a good start. This brought together Norwood’s 2 best batsmen. Quinno’s first over produced the desired wicket with Kirt playing an inauspicious slog across the line and being bowled. In his next over Quinno removed Yearworth with a strangle down the leg side, Craig taking a good catch that certainly came off the gloves. Everyone was surprised to see the batsmen walk though, as these are never certain decisions for the umpire.
Scoring wasn’t easy but the new batsmen looked determined to play a few shots and succeeded in getting hold of a few. It wasn’t long before he miscued one high in the air and Ian was circling under it like a bird of prey. He judged it well in the strong wind for the fourth wicket to fall and leave Norwood in some trouble. Young Andy Cameron replaced Wallace and bowled an excellent spell showing good control. It was then the turn of the third Andrew (McCallum) to have a bowl at the other end. He too bowled well and was unlucky not to pick up a deserved wicket.
After nipping his dad’s head for a few overs Steven replaced Andy Mac’. As soon as Proctor came in Ian was insisting that mid-on and mid-off be posted in the deep. For the first time this season Simmy listened and Steven picked up a wicket second ball to a good catch from Quinno at long-off. We could hear the “told you so’s” from Ian up in the bar.
It was Ryan’s (or Sid for short) turn for a bowl and he continued the good work from the pavilion end. We’re still not sure what was said to upset him but after picking up a wicket his bowling took on a more aggressive nature. Several head high beamers followed and he was lucky to escape a second warning from the umpire. Thankfully things settled down after that and Steven asked his dad to take him off so he could save some energy for opening the batting (no nepotism in this team). Wally came back on to finish things off and picked up another wicket and everyone was quite pleased with restricting them to 120. Had Craig not brought 2 left handed wicket-keeping gloves they might have kept them under a hundred.
A hot cup of tea was the order of the day and we are told the selection of rolls was enjoyable. After the break Steven and the inform Elliott walked out to open the innings. The rest of the team got down to the usual duties of umpiring, scoring and cover scrubbing. Quinno was first to volunteer to help Dick with the covers before he knew the full extent of what he was letting himself in for. The rest of the team disappeared quickly.
Steven probably should have bowled a few more overs as he was out in the first over, bowled off an inside edge. Craig and Elliott set about the task at hand and everything was looking simple enough until the angry kiwi was introduced to the attack. A succession of short balls followed that were dealt with admirably by Elliott, hooking most of them for four. Wally had been batting well but was next out when he picked out the man at cow corner. AB batted well with Elliott and neither of them looked in any bother until Elliott was dropped on 49 trying to play a big shot. Fortunately he reached a well deserved fifty before perishing LBW.
It was left to AB to push the score along with a few lusty blows and with Andy Wallace they saw them to the victory target.
