Match report

Forthill XI took to the field under the captaincy of Simmy jnr for the annual friendly against St.Andrews University Staff and after losing the toss, Forthill were asked to field.

Brains was given first crack at the visiting batsmen, and fancied his chances of an early wicket when one of the opening pair strode to the wicket in trackies and a multi-coloured polo shirt. As it turned out, the normally attired Frankland was first to go after edging one of several short deliveries first into his chest and then somehow over his shoulder to Finbar at first slip. The Strathie Union adage of “beware the guy with no whites” proved true as several more short deliveries from Elliot were pulled away to the mid-wicket boundary with ease by the other opener. At the other end, Gav struggled to find the right length and suffered with the short off-side boundary. Dean was next to feature in the skippers plan (?) and was rewarded with a wicket from his first ball. Runs were very much coming from one end only, and after passing 50, South African student Robertson started to bat more aggressively and went on to complete a well deserved century in the 20th over. Jalees picked up two wickets in an economical spell, both well caught by Darrel and Adees picked up a late wicket from a Simmy stumping. It was noted that Forthill XI’s specialist mid-on fielder did not appear to have suffered from his lengthy lay-off and produced a succession of (allegedly) wayward return throws to the ‘keepers displeasure.

Chasing 7-an-over was not going to be easy, and the early loss of Finbar to the wide, beamer, peach deliveries offered up by the St.Andrews opener did not help the cause. Dean recovered the situation in the second over with three consecutive boundaries, two through square leg followed up with a classic cover drive. One shot too many accounted for the Dynamite and Forthill were 24 for 2. Sean and Darryl added 85 for the next wicket, but with the run rate always rising, the game appeared to be just out of Forthill’s grasp. The 16th and 17th overs went for 12 and then 16 to keeps hopes alive, but in the end Forthill XI finished 17 runs short of victory in keenly contested friendly, which we look forward to repeating next year.

Finally, thanks to Simmy for arranging the post match pies.
