Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v DHSFP on Sun 23 Apr 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 6 wickets

Match report Anyone familiar with April weather in Scotland could have easily been fooled into thinking it was July. The outfield was hard and fast, the wicket was good and with clear blue skies and sunshine it was a perfect day for cricket. The second team game the previous day had produced well over 500 runs so we knew it would be a good game. We were without a few first choice players and of course the inimitable Ryan Watson, who was entertaining on the golf course, for the annual challenge for the Centenary Cup. The High School won the toss and elected to bat first and it soon became apparent that you couldn’t bowl anything short or it was easy pickings for the batsmen. The two opening batsmen only had to wait on the bad balls to keep the score moving along and there were too many of them for our liking. LJ was whipped out of the attack and Aman (AB) came on and bowled well.

We knew a couple of early wickets would have exposed their relatively weak batting line up. However, a couple of sharp chances went down and we made it all too easy for them to put on a century opening stand. Gav took a good catch to get the first wicket, fielding in an unusual deep second slip area, it was a stroke of luck that we needed. The pro came in next and immediately took advantage of anything short. A well hit six cleared the wall at the score box and fortunately the people in their garden were unharmed.

The shorter boundary to the score box and fast outfield meant it was hard work in the field. They kept up a healthy scoring rate assisted by some indifferent bowling and fielding. Trent batted well and hit the ball hard, his innings of 92 not out came in good time. Kenny was out for a well made half century and nobody else made much impression with the bat.

Our innings started cautiously as Pete and Howie gradually accumulated runs. We probably didn’t push them hard enough in the field to apply some early pressure. A few risks had to be taken and some luck going our way had the desired effect on the run rate. Howie lead the way with some good shots over the top, he had to leave early for work which accounted for some of the extravagant shots on display. He was out to a sharp catch at short cover and Pete was stumped not too long after. This slowed things down for a while but Bobby Cannon soon lifted the tempo with some fine shots both sides of the wicket. When Chik joined Robert there was still a bit of work to be done with over a hundred needed from the last 12 overs. The game could have gone either way and we needed a few big ones to keep us in the game but couldn’t afford to lose wickets.

Bob and Cheeko combined brilliantly and pushed the score quickly past the 200 mark, Robert bringing up his half century very quickly. At this stage we knew that it would be a tight finish. Ryan (Scribe Jnr) was feeling the stress in the scorers chair so Blackie and I decided to take charge of the scoreboard. The batsmen entertained the small crowd that had gathered to enjoy the good weather and cricket with some tremendous boundaries. By this stage there were plenty of gaps and opportunities to put pressure on the fielders, which provoked several miss-fields and additional stolen runs. Chik employed his usual mixture of thought and placement with a few well improvised shots. Robert played an excellent controlled innings giving only the one chance at long-off. When he was out with the end in site it was left to Chik (the finisher) and AB to see us home. A very good innings from Chik at the end saw us pass their total with 8 balls to spare. This was our third victory in the Centenary Cup giving us a 3-2 lead overall. With the game last year cancelled due to player shortage on the High School's part, it's 4 years since they won so I'm sure it'll be another hard fought game next year.
