Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Perth on Sun 23 Jul 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 7 wickets

Match report The sun was one again shining on Scottish cricket and the suncream and hats were out in force amongst both the players and the above average crowd for the table topping clash between Forthill XI and Perth XI.

Forthill's team was almost unrecognisable from last week with no fewer than four of the usual bowling attack missing for a variety of reasons. We did however welcome back the Sim Twins fresh from a golfing break in La Manga and Captain Sim was in even better spirits when he won the toss for the first time in six and a half seasons.

He invited the visitors to make first use of a good looking pitch and it was the Perth batsmen who were in early control in spite of the best efforts of Kean and Mo.

Gavin was given the opportunity to show his ability with the ball and he gave a good display of accurate seam bowling. Finbar also came into the attack and showed his undeniable ability and a few more 10 over spells like this will surely see him back bowling in the Premier League before long. Perth kept chipping away towards a decent total and Simmy junior came into the attack late on and cleaned up the tail.

All told, Forthill were reasonably happy to have kept Perth to 230 all out from 45 overs given the scores that have been racked up at Forthill this year and the fact that the visitors had a large number of first and second team players in their ranks.

The tea time Question and Answer session with Cully was very
interesting and kept one's mind off the seemingly endless plates of coleslaw filled sandwiches. Among other things, John revealed that the president has promised him a new sit on mower for his xmas and also said that he was going on a Grade C Hosing Course before next summer. One Perth wag asked if he thought Forthill was a better wicket than North Inch at which point it was exclusively revealed that Perth had in fact tried to head hunt John last summer. It is hoped that this type of session will be repeated later in the season.

Back to the cricket, Forthill knew they needed to win this game to cement their position at the top of the table and it was a bad start when Robbie was bowled in the second over. However, the very vociferous Perth fielders slowly got more and more quiet as Gav and Clark started to build a match winning partnership. For the second time this season, Gav once again featured in what was reckoned to
be a record breaking stand with the pair putting on 197 for the second wicket before Gav was unfortunately run out for an excellent 57.

It is once again great to see the youngsters at the club like Gav starting to show they have the technique, application and knowledge to bat for long spells and build a substantial innings and this augurs well for the future. Well played Gav.

Finbar came in and joined Clark and batted well for a quick 21 not out to finish the game off and seal a well deserved 25 points for the home side.

The latest tables now show Forthill XI sitting at the top of the division with Crieff and Montrose now the nearest challengers.
1 - Forthill XI 83.2%
2- Crieff 76.5%
3- Montrose 76.0%

With four matches remaining including games against Crieff and Montrose it is everything to play for. With no game next weekend, minds are already turning to the game against Montrose at Forthill on Sunday week.

The two teams have had some terrific scraps in the past, particularly when Dave and Jonathan were both playing, however relations between the teams have improved greatly in recent years to the extent that the games are now played in a sort of luvvy duvvy spirit. This was best portrayed last season at Links Park when the normally fiesty pair of Teddy and Spud actually sat together at tea and discussed the merits of youth cricket and each others bowling actions in a highly complimentary way.

Spectators are reminded that this game is once again all ticket and strict segregation will apply. Forthill fans will occupy the scorebox stand and pavilion end with Montrose supporters being escorted from Ferry station, up Forthill Road and straight into the Nursery Road end via Forthill school.

Commemorative "Ted Luvs Spud" t-shirts are available from the club shop priced £9.99.
