Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Montrose on Sun 06 Aug 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 5 wickets

Match report Montrose arrived at Forthill on Sunday with the ground again bathed in sunshine and the Forthill facilities being well used with the Scottish under 18 tennis championships taking place. Post match orders for the previously advertised commemorative match day t-shirts outstripped supply, and several Montrose players expressed disappointment at missing out.

Montrose chose to bat first on an hard and dry wicket that looked like there would be some assistance for the bowlers from the bare patches, but the first wicket needed no assistance from the pitch – a perfect yorker from Asif sneaking under GA Hutchison’s bat.

Simmy introduced Viduka into the attack quickly, and the normally dominant Christie found the going tough against the turning deliveries and battled his way to 39 before an edge to the waiting Jinglis in the gulley accounted for his wicket. Jinglis was in the action with the ball shortly after that, and after an over to find his line and length, foxed out two Montrose batters with the help of two stumpings by Craig.

The scoreboard read 71-6 as Hornsey’s brief stay came to end thanks to a one-handed catch by Mo at mid-wicket – the sun in his eyes being the reason given for the nonchalant approach to catching. The experienced partnership of Hutchison and Thorogood then added 40 to the score before another gem from Finbar crashed into GS Hutchison’s wicket, followed soon after by another that hit the top of off stump to make it a well deserved five wicket haul. The champagne moment of the home fielding display gave Jinglis a third, as Simmy jnr took a very sharp catch, low to his right, at first slip. Steven picked up the last wicket as Montrose were all out for 122 in 33 overs.

The Forthill batsmen knew it could prove tricky to bat last on the worn wicket, and so it proved as Gav and Robbie were both out early. 13 for 2. Craig and Marty settled into the run chase before Craig fell to Thorogood - 34 for 3. Finbar and Martin looked in control, and took the score onto 76 before a mix-up saw Martin run out for a valuable 31. Hornsey then held onto a sharp caught and bowled chance the very next ball - Finbar out for 24 and the jitters were felt in the home changing room.

With plenty overs left to bat, Asif and Ian made a determined effort not to lose any further wickets and to nudge towards the target whilst punishing anything loose – and the winning runs were scored without further loss.

Another valuable 25 points to Forthill XI with 3 games left.

Next weekend sees the first day of its kind at Forthill, with visitors Breadalbane bring their juniors to play against the Club’s under 15s on Sunday morning, ahead of the Strathmore Union match in the afternoon – and all members are requested to come along and lend their support to both matches.
