Crieff v Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sun 20 Aug 2006 at 1pm
Match was Abandoned

Match report Anticipation had been high all week among the Forthill XI squad as it became apparent that a victory at Crieff this week would have secured the league championship for 2006.

The fantastic weather of this year which had seen every league fixture played unfortunately relented on Friday night and heavy rain saw league fixtures across the country cancelled on the Saturday.

No surprise then that our match secretary made an early Sunday morning phone call to Crieff to gauge conditions, however the Crieff skipper was still under his duvet so was unable to provide an accurate assessment of conditions. However, one of our ex players holidaying in the area made contact to say the weather was unpleasant and also informed us that Crieff had a hole in their covers so it was a further late call to their skipper prior to setting off to ensure the game was not off. We were informed it was dry!

The same could not be said for Dynamite who turned up ten minutes late and minus the promised vehicle. He informed the acting skipper through an apparent Fatty's induced haze that his motor car was in Monifieth. Hasty arrangements were made to pick up Dynamite's chariot and off we sped in the direction of Perthshire and very grey skies.

Upon arrival at Crieff we realised it was the day of the Crieff Highland Games and we discussed the possibility of entering a team into the tug of war competition should the cricket be off. We thought our chances would have been far greater had the Sim family holiday not coincided with the same weekend.

The ground was found and through the headlights and windscreen wipers it became apparent that it was raining heavily. The puddles in the car park also made it clear that it had been raining for some time.

The scheduled one o clock start came and went and the rain continued to fall.

A surprise came around 1.15 pm when the Crieff lads put out the boundary flags and painted the wicket. Their use of spray cans to apply the white lines was thought interesting. Dean was kept well away for fear of a relapse and it was thought we should keep the use of spray cans away from the Forthill groundsman. We discussed the possibility that this may be some sort of traditional Highland Games type prank to attempt to start cricket in the pouring rain but they seemed serious enough. At around 2.05pm and with the 2.30 pm league set deadline approaching for the game to start, the rain went off for a short spell and the covers were pushed back in the hope that play might commence.. Unfortunately in carrying out this exercise a new large puddle was deposited in the area of the run ups which were already very wet indeed.

Some activity in the form of brushing and spreading of sawdust was attempted and our match secretary suggested bringing in the soaper sooker to help dry things out. By the time we realised what he was trying to say, it had started to rain again.

Crieff seemed keen to play and in view of our concerns over the very wet run ups and muddy areas at the ends of old wickets their skipper very kindly offered to dispense with the toss and bowl first to allow the run ups to dry out. This offer was declined.

With time now marching on, the odd spot of rain still falling, the run ups still unplayable and no prospect of starting the game by 2.30pm, the match was cancelled.

Crieff appeared disappointed and voiced some displeasure at the outcome, however it was unfortunately just one of these days where the weather won and common sense prevailed.

The Forthill lads headed back to Dundee through more very heavy rain and were themselves disappointed to have made a fruitless journey, especially having been in such great form all season and with the league within their grasp.

However, the champagne goes on ice and hopefully the sunshine will return and the league title can be won on home soil next weekend.
