Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 21 runs

Match report Dynamite Dean's Match Report....

With no league match scheduled, Forthill travelled to Meigle for a friendly, our 13 strong team bolstered Meigle’s 7 man team…

Pottsy’s new Sat Nav was asked a few questions about reliability when his car ended up in the middle of what appeared to be the Tour de France, but it turned out to be Meigle after all, and after a few lefts and rights and we arrived safe at the ground for a 1pm start.

As Meigle were short we decided to give them a few players - Robbie, Kevin and Blackie were volunteered and it was game on.

Winning the toss we elected to bat, putting Finbar and the Beast in to open. During his time at the crease Finbar showed his charismatic flare with a number of brilliantly timed forward defensives until the last ball of the opening over penetrated his guard, hit the wickets and he was on his way back to the pavilion one duck better off. L.J. coming in next was determined to prove himself with the bat and win back his first team slot. Beauty and The Beast put on a fairytale display of 117 before a catch ended this partnership and Beast was on his way back to the changing room with 64 to his name. L.J. soon joined him for a respectable 43. Brief stays at the crease from Gavin and Pottsy meant at last the crowd got what they paid for… the entertainer came in sporting his cricketing motto:

“I’m not here for a long time, I’m here for a good time.”

He looked set for a good score after his first ball was sent towards the boundary before Blackie cut it off and was only rewarded with a 3. A lovely edge to the fine leg boundary saw Dynamites strike rate pass beyond the 300 mark before an unplayable ball was sent hurtling towards the wickets, the ball swinging just as the powerbow was coming down, and Dean was on his way back to prepare for his bowling spell.

Stand in captain Butts also put in a good shift and ended up with 29 before it was time to join his team-mates in the changing room, which left Sam to score a quick fire 17 not out and for Winker, in for one ball, which ended up over the ropes for 4. “The Hill” finishing on 197 for 7 off the allocated overs.

With the batting over it was time for tea with the finest selection of sandwiches and cakes from the Meigle market being on offer.

As we went out in the field spirits were high, the sun shone on our backs, the grass was as green as ever and the birds and the bees were out in force. The opening bowlers were to be The Mighty Martin and the raw pace of Winker. Kean told us that he would rather be in Camperdown Park, supposedly something was happening there all weekend but I’m not sure… maybe the flower show or something?

A number of half chances came the fielders way with one miraculous catch that would have surely put Dean in the Scotland squad being disallowed as the ball hit the ground. Oh well rules are rules. Finbar soon followed Dean’s example, with an edge through to the slip cordon again hitting the deck. Greg failed to hang onto another chance at slip, and I was about to start charging for membership of my Butterfingers club when I had a thought…. those sandwiches at tea… maybe the excessive amount of butter made it impossible to hold onto the reconditioned match ball from Dick’s vintage collection?

But anyhoo, the Dynamite was soon asked to replace Winker at the pavilion end and by gosh the Meigle pro was soon out, with a catch by Gavin. Dean’s talents soon put Winkers ability as an opener in doubt as his opening spell left him with 1 wicket for no runs. Sam complimenting him at the other end with a tight line and length before dismissing one home bat, which resulted in the off stump having to be collected from Meigle High Street.

Dean came on for another spell, or technically his second over, which troubled the batsman but unfortunately could not find the edge. Finbar took over as Blackie came in and wasn’t put off by a few strikes from Blackie, his famous googly winning the battle. Kevin displayed a number of fine shots before also falling to Finbar.

The last wicket partnership was creeping towards our total, aided by Winker dropping a DOLLY. Luckily he recovered to take a beauty and Meigle finished 173 all out. HOORAY!
