Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Perth Doo'cot 2nd XI on Sun 24 Jul 2016 at 1pm
Match was Abandoned
Match report
Rain, the scourge of all Scottish cricketers in 2016 was once again the winner at Forthill on Sunday. The 21st century weather forecasts are normally not far off the mark. Various apps like Hammering Doon and Dirty Black Clouds are fairly good - and the general prediction from the weathermen was for late afternoon rain of the heavy variety. Undeterred and in hope of a meteorological miracle, the players of Forfarshire 3rd XI and Dooky Dynamos 2’s took to the field of play.
Still reeling from last week’s debacle, the home skipper won the toss and against normal type he opted to field first on another good looking track. From the off, a strong visiting batting line up took command and the feature of the innings was their ability to punish any loose deliveries. Craig was the only bowler who really managed to stem the flow of runs – and some good late hitting saw a final sizeable total of 276 for 4 being posted. There was one lengthy rain interruption to contend with and the home captain headed to the kitchen at that stage. Most thought he was discussing an early tea with Chef Dave……….. truth was he was seeing if his head would fit into the oven.
Turned out it didn’t……only because the oven was full of pizza.
Another lesson in the need to bowl a consistent line and length had been dished out to the young home bowlers…. Some fine batting from Z. Ali, 98 not out, L. Hachlett 56 not out and F.Ali 52 was to be highly commended for the Dynamos. High praise also goes to visiting scorer Ronny McPhee who did well to keep track of the hefty run scoring; in spite of being super glued to his chair and unable to change the scoreboard himself.
Tea was not surprisingly taken in the tea room and the lack of tables and chairs was a point of discussion. This lead to the home players decanting to the bar and the visitors having to cosy up on the leather couches. Perhaps a point of thought for future tea arranging. With the season hurtling to a close, an effort was made by the home team to overtake the Sunrisers at the head of the Golden Urn Table. A very nice array of sandwiches and rolls was on offer. Some even had roast beef and there was very little egg. The visitors normally supply an egg fest themselves; but seemed happy that there was minimal chicken produced bullets on show. There was a fine array of pizzas on show; and also sausage rolls. The tasty treat plates looked good. The usual Kipling type stuff was added to by a magnificent Mrs Sim provided Victoria sponge – and also an apple pie which was not home made…. but none the less tasty. The tea was well brewed and with juice for the youngsters Chef Dave had done a fine job. Upshot was a mark of 81 was awarded and the Forthill side now move to the top of the Golden Urn table for 2016. In spite of the fine culinary effort; one of the visiting players was unhappy about the lack of vegetarian options on view. Visiting teams are reminded that special dietary needs or requests should be e mailed to Forfarshire CC three days in advance of any game on veggies@fussygits.com
After building a tea pile that reached from his knees to his head on his plate and somehow transporting it to the bar area, Cammy then proceeded to try and bully his younger team mates into getting him a second cup of tea from the tea room. One nice youngster almost succumbed to the request; however his team mates talked him out of it. Cammy then displayed a random act of kindness himself by getting his skipper a cup of tea which was good of him. In return, the skipper stole and ate Cammy’s one remaining chocolate biscuit…..
Rain fell heavily during what became an extended tea break; however it perhaps surprisingly relented and the reply commenced under gloomy skies. Calum and Cammy opened up well and after 5 overs we were 33 for 0 wicket; however the heavens opened again and this time it was terminal and play was over for the day. No result, no points and technically a complete waste of time. A pity as it might have ended up a decent contest.
Young Calum had a vital question for the skipper after the game. The captain is always happy to offer advice to the youngsters and was keen to listen to the question. He presumed it was probably to do with batting technique, field placement or general cricketing knowledge. Imagine his surprise when the following question came his way……..
“Clark, what is the best way to clean your shoes?” Somewhat flummoxed; he suggested a wet cloth might be a good place to start…..!!!!!
Forfarshire 3’s therefore remain at the bottom of the table and a relegation 50 pointer is next up at Spider Stadium against the High School Hurricanes in what will be the last local derby of the season. Rumour has it that the Hurricanes have flown paceman Michael Ancell over from Australia to play in the game.
Lastly, visitors to Forthill will have seen that Walker Construction have continued their extensive redevelopment of the Western side of the ground. The AG Walker Stand is now in the shadow of Ted’s Shed and Walker’s Wigwam which form the new entertainment complex and focal point of the arena at the North West corner of the ground. Phase three is now underway in the south-west corner - and the new multi storey car park and rooftop viewing area is now moving forward apace. The car park will house sixteen cars and the rooftop viewing area will have a one man/seven lady hot-tub, leather massage chairs and a collection of hammocks. The roof area will be reached by a private lift. Finance for the project is being provided by Donald J Trump – who is also next week’s match ball sponsor.
