St Modans v Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sun 11 May 2008 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 113 runs
Match report
Forthill XI opened up the 2008 season with a long jaunt to St Modans. Newcomer Andrew Hay immediately made a good impression on the skipper by turning up in a sizeable people carrier and was later heard mumbling that he would bring his two seater sports car next week. Admittedly, this was after being despatched with four under 18's who were fighting over which video to watch. So Sponge Bob Square Pants all the way to Stirling it was for Andrew and the boys.
Upon arrival at the ground we saw the opposition going through a rigorous warm up routine whilst we munched on coke and crisps. A close inspection of the wicket showed that heavy overnight rain had turned the normally rock like Bluebell Wood Park strip into a spongy, muddy mess. We then found out that the home ranks included a fast bowling South African professional. All in all not the ideal start to the season - before a ball had been bowled. It couldn't get any worse we thought - then Simmy lost the toss.
Inserted on a "sticky dog" against a highly charged and voiciferous home team, in went Kevin and Simmy Junior. Both players had clearly grown during the close season, Kevin looked bigger and stronger after a winter fitness regime, Steven just looked bigger. Batting was tough but the opening pair stuck to the task and saw off the openers before the pro came on and fired one through Steven's defences after a solid innings. Clark came in and helped Kevin to tick things along and a nice partnership was being built when Kevin unfortunately mistimed a pull when looking in great nick. This was a nice innings in difficult conditions.
Ian came in next and showed that his preference is definitely for the harder Forthill wickets as opposed to Stirling mud baths and the lack of pace on the ball was not to his liking unfortunately.
Elliot came in next after a winter in New Zealand and his partnership with Clark started to take the game away from St Modans. Some nice hitting and good running kept the board ticking along and when Clark was next out going for one big hit too many a total in excess of 200 seemed possible. Andy Hay came in next and showed some nice touches and kept the board ticking along and the skipper came in and played a typical early season average building innings to take us to 208 which seemed a mammoth score under the conditions.
A tidy wee tea followed of mainly sandwiches and sausage rolls with a bit of cake on the side and in a new initiative introduced this season to the third team all teas will be marked on a weekly basis. A prize for Top Tea of the Year will be awarded at the end of the season. St Modans kicked off with a creditable 6 out of 10. The judges commented that the sandwich content could have had more flair and variety and the lack of ketchup with the sausage rolls was a black mark. The cake offering whilst filling was not too exciting. The tea was highly commended however the lack of coffee or juice was disappointing. The tea lady marks as always will remain a secret.
Well filled, the Forthill side made it's way to the middle and discussed the combined amount of money that Messrs Sim Sr, Hay and Vine had spent in their lifetime on Indian meals. It was felt that if they had not eaten curry, not only would their combined weight be approximately ten stones lighter, but they could also each have bought a controlling share in Chelsea FC.
After this inspiring thought, Kevin and Mo opened the bowling and St Modans seemed intent in knocking the runs off in double quick time. They seemed to think we were playing 20/20 cricket and in the face of some accurate bowling proceeded to play a number of rash shots and were quickly in trouble. Mo bowled a fine spell in spite of his skin tight whites which allegedly belonged to his sister. A quick check of the remainder of his clothing seemed to suggest that this was genuine mistake on his part.
Elliot and Glen then joined the attack and also picked up wickets and St Modans soon folded to a poor total of 92 all out.
Credit goes to our very young bowling attack for performing so well and with the overs (apart from a couple of gems from Mick) being bowled entirely by an under 18 attack, this augurs well for the future.
So a great 25 point haul on the road was just what the skipper ordered and the troops delivered in fine style.
The endless hours of winter fielding practice should also be mentioned with every chance that came our way being snapped up apart from one late lapse by a Finger Aid less Ian, His lucrative contract with Finger Aid having come to an end he is reportedly considering an offer from rival company No Drops.
Next week sees the Forthill XI's first game at Forthill this year with Strathearn the visitors. Should be a great game.
After the match the skipper will be having a traditional after opening game Kebab evening to which all players are invited. Their will be free Kebabs for all and Simmy will once again be trying to defeat his Guinness Book Of Records total of five Kebabs ( with everything) in three minutes. Alex Hay and Mick are thought to be mounting a challenge to this record. So the smart money in Forthill this week is going on shares in Chachis Kebab Shop.
